If their relationship were actually deep and loving, Careline might have felt a little uncomfortable, maybe even jealous.
But…
She swore, she didn’t feel the slightest bit sad–she just wanted to laugh!
She wanted to ask. David, did you bring me here just to watch this? How boring.
But after some thought, she decided to keep quiet. If she provoked him, she wouldn’t come out of this unscathed.
“Mr. Ellison!” Elizabeth pouted, clinging to his arm. “Look at her! She keeps laughing and laughing— what’s so funny? She’s obviously mocking us!”
After a brief pause, her eyes flickered as she added, exaggerating the situation, “She must think I’m the other woman, that you’re a cheating man, and that we’re immoral for being together. She… she looks down on us!”
Caroline shook her head and waved her hands. “No, really, no! You’re overthinking it. Why am I laughing? I already told you. Could you actually listen?“.
David’s face darkened. His gaze locked onto Caroline, deep and intense, carrying a hint of menace.
Slowly, Caroline stopped laughing, shrugged, and said, Fine, carry on. Just pretend I’m not here. I won’t make a sound.”
She mimed zipping her lips shut.

They were talking about something, but Caroline wash interested. She absentmindedly plucked a vine from somewhere and started swiping it against the bushes as she walked.
Who knows how long they’d keep this up? I’m.

Sleepy. I just want to go to bed.
tery from exhaustion.
She yawned at least ten times, her eyes
She checked the time. She really wanted to call out to them and say, It’s late. Time to go to bed,
Just as she was about to speak, someone suddenly stepped out from the shaded path near the trees-
And she nearly ran right into Harper.
“Caroline?”
“Madam Harp… Mom?”
Harper walked up to her. “It’s so late. What are you doing at the hospital?”
“Uh, I… uh…” Caroline scrambled for an excuse before flipping the question. “Mom, why are you here?”
“I came to visit an old friend. She’s been hospitalized. We haven’t seen each other in ages, and we ended up talking for too long–I almost forgot to go home,” Harper replied, then gave her a concerned look. “Caroline, why are you crying?”
Huh? Crying? I wasn’t crying! I have just yawned too many times!
Just as Caroline was about to explain, Harper took her hand. “Are you feeling wronged? Did someone bully you? Caroline, you really need to toughen up.”
