Chapter 346 I Was Just Tired and Yawning Too Much
“You can’t keep carrying everything on your own, bottling it up and never saying a word. Back when you were in the orphanage, I didn’t have the ability to help you. But now, things are different. If anything happens, come to me. I’ll stand up for you. You have a mother–in–law now, understand? You’re not an orphan anymore–you have me. I’m your mother now. And if I can’t solve it, there’s always David. He’s your husband, and it’s his job to help you. Don’t you dare let yourself suffer in silence.”
“Or…” Harper narrowed her eyes. “Is it David who’s bullying you?”
“It’s not-”
But Harper wasn’t listening. She lifted her head, looking around, and soon spotted David and Elizabeth.
“David! Get over here!”
At the sound of her voice, David finally turned and noticed Harper standing there.
His brows furrowed slightly. Elizabeth instinctively took two steps back.
Harper was not someone to be trifled with. The last time they clashed, Elizabeth had suffered a major loss -she still remembered it vividly. It was Harper who had personally ordered that she was never to set foot in the Ellison residence again.
Now, with no official status, she knew better than to provoke Harper directly.
“Mom,” David greeted coolly as he walked over.
“Oh, so you do remember I’m your mother?” Harper snapped. “Then do you also remember that you’re Caroline’s husband?”
David pressed his lips together, saying nothing.
“I’m asking you a question! What’s with all this hesitation? Trying to make me die of anger?” Harper scolded. “You walked ahead on your own, leaving Caroline behind. Do you really think that was the right thing to do? Look at her–she’s so upset she’s crying!”
Crying? Her?
David finally turned his gaze to Caroline.
It was late, and the dim glow of the moon and streetlights cast soft shadows over her face.
But sure enough, her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, a thin layer of moisture clinging to her lashes. Her nose was slightly red, making her look pitiful.
David’s lips slowly curved upward. “You’re right. That was my mistake–I shouldn’t have made her cry.”
He said the words, but his expression…
He looked pleased. Very pleased.
So, Caroline finally cried.

Turns out, she was just forcing herself to smile. So her acting was better than his after all–she had almost fooled him.
So this was what she did when he wasn’t looking–hiding behind him, silently shedding tears.
For as long as he and Elizabeth had been walking ahead, she had been crying behind them.
If Mom hadn’t shown up and pointed it out, David realized, he probably wouldn’t have even noticed.
He had almost believed Caroline was completely heartless. But in reality, she just preferred to hide her pain, to endure it in silence.
Yeah, that’s just like her–stubborn and unyielding.
Meanwhile, Caroline stood there, utterly bewildered.
Oh no. Madam Harper misunderstood, and now David has too. What do I do?
With his inflated ego and ridiculous arrogance, he was definitely going to assume she was heartbroken over him and Elizabeth!
Oh my god, this is so unfair!
“I wasn’t crying…” she protested. “Mom, I was just-”
“It’s okay, Caroline. Don’t worry. I’ll stand up for you!” Harper reassured her.
“But mom, I really was just-”
Harper interrupted again. “You’re a woman. There’s nothing shameful about shedding a few tears.”
Caroline was on the verge of breaking down.
“I was just tired! I yawned too much, and that’s why my eyes teared up!”
