Harper continued her scolding. “Some women love to throw themselves at men, climbing the social ladder with ulterior motives. David, you’d better be careful not to let them take advantage of you. The Ellison family’s door isn’t one that just anyone can walk through. From the beginning until now, the only daughter–in–law I recognize is Caroline. If I ever catch you walking side by side with a woman who isn’t Caroline again, you’ll be kneeling in the family chapel, begging for mercy!”

If anyone has a problem with it, they can come find me–I’ll take the blame! Don’t ever hide away and cry by yourself again, understood?”
Harper patted Caroline’s hand, her warmth and kindness radiating in stark contrast to her earlier ferocity.
It was as if she had completely transformed into a different person.
Caroline nodded. “I understand, mom.”
“Don’t just say it–make sure you act on it. Show them who’s in charge.”
