David’s eyes narrowed slightly as he studied her.
She lowered her head, deliberately avoiding his gaze. “Can I go home now?”
His reply was immediate. “No.”
“Then what else do you need me to do?”
David’s voice was emotionless. “Stand here. And wait.”
Caroline didn’t question it. She simply responded with a short “Oh.”
Without another word, David turned and grabbed Elizabeth’s hand, striding toward the hospital ward.
“Mr. Ellison… slow down,” Elizabeth whined. “I can’t keep up.”
Without hesitation, David bent down and lifted her into his arms.
“Ah!” Elizabeth gasped in delight, immediately wrapping her arms around his neck.
She was overjoyed.
Turning toward Caroline, she expected to see jealousy in her expression.
But Caroline had already turned away, uninterested.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Caroline felt nothing–David could do as he pleased, and it wouldn’t make a difference to her.
Elizabeth deliberately raised her voice. “Mr. Ellison, am I heavy? Carrying me must be tiring… But it’s okay; I can walk.”
“I can handle carrying you.”
“I feel so happy right now…”
David carried her back to her hospital room and gently laid her on the bed.
Elizabeth, however, refused to let go. “Mr. Ellison… Are you leaving again tonight?”
“Mm.”

She tugged at his sleeve, her eyes soft with expectation, hoping he would give in.
But David’s response remained the same. “Get some rest.”
Another rejection.
“Mr. Ellison…” A trace of disappointment crossed Elizabeth’s face. “Can’t you even fulfill this one simple request for me?”
“The room is too small. The bed is too small. There’s no space for two.”
Elizabeth knew that was just an excuse. She wanted to argue, but David had already pulled his sleeve free and straightened up.
He wasn’t staying.
“In the past, I wouldn’t have asked you to stay,” Elizabeth murmured, her voice shaking. “But tonight… tonight, I feel awful.” Tears pooled in her eyes. “You saw how Ms. Harper treated me… the way she spoke to me. You heard everything.”
David’s expression remained neutral. “Don’t dwell on it.”
“How can I not, Mr. Ellison? She’s your mother–your closest family–but she doesn’t like me. She looks down on me, warns me… How am I supposed to deal with her in the future?”
“You won’t have to see her often,” David replied. “And if you do, just keep your distance.”
Harper lived at the family estate, enjoying her retirement, rarely interfering with the younger generation.
This was just an unexpected encounter.
“It’s easy to avoid her now, but what about in the future?” Elizabeth asked. “What about after the baby is born? When she has a grandson? Am I supposed to keep hiding from her forever?”
David’s brows furrowed. “We’ll deal with it when the time comes.”
