Keep investigating. Keep searching. If they found something, great. If they didn’t… then it didn’t matter. After all, those two illegitimate children would either never make it out of Caroline’s womb or would be taken away the moment they were born. At this point, their biological father’s identity was insignificant.
With that thought, David turned and walked out of the hospital room, his footsteps echoing down the empty corridor.
It wasn’t until several minutes after his presence had faded that Elizabeth dared to push the door open.
Who had Mr. Ellison been speaking to? And what was so important that he had to keep it from me? So secretive.
He was acting suspicious. She had only picked up a few words–clues, waiting, answers, and reports.
What exactly was he investigating?
Elizabeth’s heart raced. She muttered under her breath, “Could this have something to do with me? What could be so important that Mr. Ellison is investing so much effort into uncovering it? What if… what if he’s trying to uncover the truth about that night? That would be a disaster!” She shook her head quickly. “No, that’s impossible. Everything is in my favor right now. Nothing can go wrong!”
Elizabeth took a deep breath and whispered a silent prayer.
“No, I can’t just sit here panicking. That won’t get me anywhere. I need to think. I have to find an opportunity to get answers from Mr. Ellison himself. Or at the very least, I need to be more observant when I’m around him–watch his expressions, listen to his words, and figure out what he’s after.”
With that resolution, Elizabeth slowly calmed down.
No matter what Mr. Ellison was investigating, it couldn’t lead back to her.
She had worked too hard to get here. She wasn’t going to let anything ruin it now.
The city was eerily still at this late hour. The roads were nearly empty, save for the occasional car that sped by, fading into the darkness just as quickly as it arrived.
Caroline stood by the roadside, idly kicking at a small rock with the tip of her shoe.
She had no idea how much longer she was supposed to wait.
Was David really going to leave her standing here all night while he spent time with Elizabeth?
It sounded exactly like something he would do. It wouldn’t surprise her.

“Ten more minutes. That’s all,” Caroline muttered. “If David doesn’t show up, I’m marching into that hospital room. I don’t care what they’re doing–sleeping, talking, or something else—I’ll pull the covers off
them!”
Was he trying to toy with me?
The thought of David and Elizabeth’s stunned expressions if she actually did it… It was almost amusing.

Caroline’s stomach churned.
She couldn’t let David take her baby.
She couldn’t let her child be taken away–they had to be with her, living by her side!
But how? How was she supposed to fight against David’s control?
He was too powerful, too untouchable–always getting exactly what he wanted.
Caroline despised him. But she was powerless against him.
“Ms. Brooks.” A voice suddenly called out to her–gentle yet firm.
Caroline lifted her head.
A middle–aged man, dressed in a finely tailored suit, stood in front of her, smiling in a calm and polite
manner.
He looked familiar. But she couldn’t remember where she had seen him before.
