The man introduced himself with a polite smile. “Ms. Brooks, I’m Mr. Nash’s driver.”
“Oh, so it’s you.”
Caroline recognized him now.
Nash had always had the same driver–since their college days, he had never changed.

Back when she and Nash were close, this very driver had often brought her food or small gifts on Nash’s behalf.
It had been a long time since she had last seen him, which was why he seemed unfamiliar at first.
Instinctively, Caroline glanced around, searching for Nash’s figure.
If his driver was here, then where was he? Why hadn’t he come himself?
“Ms. Brooks, Mr. Nash chose not to meet you in person because he didn’t want to cause any misunderstandings with Mr. Ellison,” the driver explained. “But he’s nearby–he’s watching you right now, though you won’t be able to see him. Please don’t misunderstand–he isn’t following you. He simply happened to notice you standing here. In fact, he’s been watching for a while. Ever since you and Mr. Ellison sent Madam Harper off, Mr. Nash has been observing from a distance.”
“So… he saw everything. He knows exactly what happened,” Caroline murmured, a bitter smile forming on her lips.
She and Nash were better off keeping their distance.
Given her current situation, she couldn’t risk dragging him into her troubles.
Avoiding each other was the only option. In fact, it would be best if they never crossed paths again.

“That’s why he sent me instead. But Ms. Brooks, I need to clarify–he’s not avoiding you because he fears Mr. Ellison’s retaliation. He’s doing it because he doesn’t want to make things harder for you.”
