Chapter 360 He Left Me, but He Also Saved Me

Nash never entered that room. Instead, a man she had never seen before did, taking everything from her.
To this day, she had no idea who he was.
That night was scared into her memory.
The room had been pitch–black. The lights were off, her wrists and ankles bound. She couldn’t move, couldn’t see him, but she could still sense things about him.
He was strong, athletic, and clearly maintained his physique.
He was likely in his early thirties.
A faint trace of cologne clung to him, and his hands were firm, his fingers long and well–defined. He wasn’t some middle–aged, unkempt man.
Caroline had no idea why the man had entered her room, taken advantage of her, and left her pregnant without any precautions. However, based on what she experienced that night, he was in good physical shape and seemed well–built.
That was part of the reason she had chosen to keep the baby.
Her entire life, she had lived under others, constantly struggling to find stability. After leaving David, she knew it would be nearly impossible to love again, let alone trust someone enough to marry.
At least if she had two children, she wouldn’t be completely alone.
She might not know their father’s identity, but she had no doubt they would be strong and healthy- perhaps even intelligent.
That was a far better future than spending the rest of her life in solitude.
Had she suspected that the man had been some overweight, middle–aged stranger, she wouldn’t have hesitated to terminate the pregnancy.
“Ms. Brooks, Mr. Nash only wishes for your happiness,” the driver sighed. “That’s the only way he can have peace of mind.”
Caroline lowered her gaze. “Please thank him for me… and tell him something.”
“Of course, Ms. Brooks. What would you like me to pass along?”
“I owe Nash my gratitude. He saved me from the Brooks family when no one else would, shielding me from the humiliation they had planned for me and preserving what little dignity I had left. I spent so long misunderstanding him, treating him with indifference. As for his engagement to Julia–I came to terms with it long ago. I don’t hold it against him, nor do I harbor any resentment. He made a decision that would benefit him, that would provide him with the support he needed. That is human nature–to seek what benefits us, to grasp the opportunities that ensure success. It only proves that we were never meant to be. Our paths crossed, our lives intertwined, but fate was never in our favor. We were always destined to part ways. But we had four wonderful years in college together, and for that, I’m grateful. It’s been long enough. Everything that needed to be left behind has already been let go. The last time we met, when he pulled me away from Julia, I said some harsh things. But I need him to know–I said them for a reason. I wanted to push him away, to make sure he wouldn’t interfere in my life again. He has always wanted what’s best for

me when no one else did. We owe each other nothing now. I was simply unlucky–I couldn’t escape what happened that night. Even though he saved me, I was still destined to marry into the Ellison family, and that fate was just as cruel. He saved me once, but he cannot save me forever. My life, my struggles, my burdens–they are mine alone to bear. No one else should have to carry them for me. I don’t need his help anymore. And I refuse to be the one who holds him back. As long as he is happy and safe, that is enough for me. That will always be enough for me.”
The night wind brushed past her, carrying her words into the distance.
Her voice was quiet, but there was no wavering–only certainty.
This was her truth.
She and Nash… in all likelihood, would never cross paths again.
