Chapter 57 A Bowl of Soup That Could Kill You
The sound of shattering glass rang out in the quiet dining room.
Caroline froze, still holding the spoon in her hand, while shards of the bowl and spilled bird’s nest soup- lay scattered on the floor.
The moment she heard it was from the Brooks family, there was no way she could eat it!
A chill ran down her spine. She felt both shocked and fortunate that she hadn’t taken a bite and had only brought the soup close to her lips.
Il’ho could tell what might have been added to it? After her marriage, the Brooks family had completely ignored her. Why the sudden concern noto?
Caroline thought back to her encounter with Elizabeth at the hospital earlier.
Could it be that Elizabeth had discovered her pregnancy? If so, could the soup be laced with something to harm her baby?
“Madam, are you all right?” Paul asked, looking concerned.
Caroline quickly masked her thoughts. “Oh… nothing. The soup was too hot, and I accidentally dropped it.”
“What a pity. Your mother prepared it herself, and this was the only bowl.”
“It’s fine. Consider it eaten,” Caroline said evenly, “Please have someone clean this up.”
Right away, Madam.”
Her heart was still pounding. She had almost eaten it, but thankfully, Paul’s words stopped her just in time.
Whether or not there was anything wrong with the soup, Caroline vowed never to touch anything sent by the Brooks family again.
No one would ever get the chance to harm the two babies growing inside her!
Caroline gently touched her stomach, watching as the maids cleared the mess. Her nerves slowly calmed.
But when she turned, she saw David standing at the doorway, his cold, penetrating gaze fixed on her.
When had he arrived? How long had he been standing theret Had he heard my entire conversation with Paul?
David broke the silence. “Your performance was clumsy, to say the least.” He stepped closer, his commanding presence making her tense, and looked down at her. “The nioment you found out it was from the Brooks family, you dropped it. Isn’t that right
“I didn’t, Caroline denied without hesitation.
“You’re so guarded against your own family. Is there anyone you trust in this world?”
Caroline met his gaze, unwavering. “The Brooks family isn’t my family.”

“It’s just a bowl of bird’s nest soup. Do you really think it could poison you?” David raised an eyebrow. “What’s got you so frightened?”
The Brooks family wouldn’t have the guts to harm Caroline outright, and even if they did, they wouldn’t do it in such an obvious way.
David would never allow his wife to come to such an end.
There had to be another explanation for her behavior.
“I just don’t want to owe the Brooks family anything, not even a bowl of soup,” Caroline said, her voice steady. “After marrying you, I’ve severed all ties with them. I don’t want their kindness or any further connections. To ensure her words sounded convincing, she added, “They raised me for twenty years and got five billion dollars in return. That’s more than enough for them.”
David studied her intently for a few seconds before finally looking away.
He didn’t say anything further.
Caroline’s shoulders relaxed as the tension left her body.
Caught between the Brooks family’s manipulations and David’s intense scrutiny, survival was already a struggle. Now, she also had to protect the twins growing inside her.
Life wasn’t easy. It was exhausting.
She thought the matter was over, but to her surprise, Samantha and Elizabeth appeared at the Ellison residence early the next morning!
Samantha held a food container and began placing dishes on the table. “These are all of Caroline’s favorites,” she said with a warm smile.
