Caroline asked, word by word, “What if I kill you?”
“Kill me?” David raised an eyebrow. “You don’t have the ability.”

“Fine, remember what you said today, David. When I get the chance, I won’t hesitate to kill you.”
He arrogantly replied, “I could give you a knife right now, and you still wouldn’t have the strength to drive it into my heart.”
David withdrew his hand, turned, and strode out.
Caroline collapsed onto the bed helplessly.
Kill David? Take his life?
She lived with him every day, and if anyone had the best chance of succeeding, it was her.
He wouldn’t divorce her, wouldn’t let her go, and allowed Elizabeth to bully her with impunity. He took pleasure in tormenting her every now and then.
What kind of life is this?
Suddenly, Caroline turned over, got out of bed, and found a sharp little knife at the very bottom of the wardrobe in the closet.
Small, but just the right size to hold, and easy to hide.
She stuffed the knife into her pillowcase.
It would be within reach whenever she needed it.
One day, one time, this knife would be put to use!
Even if this knife couldn’t kill David, it would still serve as a means of self–defense.
Or, if she were driven to the edge, she could end it herself.
The thought flashed through her mind, and Caroline suddenly froze.

“Caroline, what are you doing here?” Anna asked, puzzled. “You missed the meeting this morning. Mr. Boris said you were given another task, so you wouldn’t be coming to the office for the next couple of days…”
Caroline smiled. “I finished early, so I came back ahead of schedule.”
“You’re working too hard. You need to take care of yourself,” Anna said, looking at her face. “You look a bit pale.”
“I’m fine, really. It’s just that it’s too hot outside. I’ll be fine once I get some air conditioning.”
Anna kindly fanned her with her hand. “Are you hungry? Have you eaten? I remember you have low blood sugar. Don’t forget to eat when you get busy.”
That was when Caroline remembered she had only eaten breakfast.
“See? You’re not taking care of yourself. Sit down. I’ll go get you some food.”
“Thank you, Anna.”
Having such a considerate friend felt like a kindness from the universe.
Just as Caroline opened her computer, Boris suddenly appeared beside her.
“Mr. Boris?”
“Back already?” Boris asked.
