Elizabeth froze, momentarily forgetting to cry. “Mr. Ellison, what… what do you mean by that? I don’t understand.”
What did he mean by that–saying I deserved it? I thought Mr. Ellison was on my side. Why was he taking Caroline’s side?
“You don’t know why she hit you?”
Elizabeth knew all too well. She had orchestrated the kidnapping and even plotted to harm Caroline’s child. But there was no way she could let Mr. Ellison find out the truth.
Feigning confusion, she shook her head. “I don’t understand what I could’ve done to offend Caroline. Maybe Caroline just doesn’t like me.”
David’s gaze turned icy. “You accused her of sleeping with another man.”
Elizabeth snapped, “But she did! She’s done it before!”
It was a fact she was sure of. There was no mistake!
The night Caroline joined the Ellison family, her parents sold her to a wealthy man and sent her to a hotel.
But the wealthy man didn’t show up. Instead, Mr. Ellison entered the room and spent the night with her.
Caroline had assumed the man was the buyer, but in reality, it had been David all along.
Elizabeth and her parents knew this secret well and had vowed never to reveal it.
Why was Mr. Ellison claiming she had slandered Caroline?
“She didn’t do it,” David said, his tone resolute. “I’ve already confirmed it.”
Elizabeth shook her head in disbelief. “No! That’s impossible! Something must be wrong!”
Caroline was pregnant. How could a pregnant woman not have been intimate with someone? It was absurd.
“Mr. Ellison, did you check this yourself, or are you just believing whatever Caroline says?” Elizabeth demanded, her voice rising with urgency. “You can’t trust her. She’s sly and manipulative. She must have deceived you! I can guarantee—”
“Silence!” David’s stern voice cut her off, leaving her no choice but to comply.
How did Caroline manage to evade David’s inspection?

“Stop causing her trouble,” David said firmly. “And don’t spread lies or make false accusations. Is that clear?”
“I… I didn’t make anything up,” Elizabeth muttered, her frustration evident.
She was convinced Caroline had slept with someone else, but Mr. Ellison refused to believe her, letting Caroline walk away unscathed.
David didn’t waste another moment on her and walked away. “Go home and stay there.”
“Mr. Ellison!” Elizabeth called after him, still unwilling to let it go. “This isn’t a trivial matter. Her reputation is at stake! I wouldn’t say this if I weren’t sure. She’s lying to you! If you don’t believe me, let’s go to the hospital and-”
Before she could finish, David turned and glared at her with icy impatience.
“Behave yourself, Elizabeth.”
Because of Elizabeth’s accusations, he had checked Caroline, which had strained their relationship and even led to an argument.
Her persistence now only deepened his annoyance.
He was growing increasingly annoyed by Elizabeth’s presence. Every word she spoke seemed insufferably loud and irritating.
The night they’d spent together felt irrelevant, as if it had never happened.
If only Caroline had been in that room instead of Elizabeth.
The thought stopped David in his tracks.
Why would such a thought even cross my mind? How could I possibly wish for that?
If it weren’t for Richard and Harper, he would have divorced Caroline long ago.
Damn it, Caroline must have put a curse on me, stealing away my heart effortlessly!
“Elizabeth,” David said suddenly, “was it really you in the hotel room that night?”
