The sudden shift from warm water to the cool air made Caroline shiver, her shoulders instinctively curling inward.
She was soaked, exposed, and vulnerable.
“Why so quiet?” David demanded. “Is it because you’ve never truly forgotten Nash?”
Caroline bit her lip and replied, “Yes.”
David’s eyes narrowed, his expression turning icy.
“Yes,” she repeated, her voice firm. “I haven’t forgotten him, and I don’t see why I should. What does it matter to you?”
“I’m your husband!” David barked.
Caroline stared straight at him. “You can dictate my actions, but my heart is beyond your reach.”
There was no use trying to explain herself–he had already heard everything. She decided to confront him head–on.
Breaking free from his grip, she picked up her robe, wrapped it around her, and stepped out of the tub to face him.
“Why does it bother you so much who I love?” she asked, stepping closer. “Could it be… you’re in love with me?”
She reached out and poked his chest, right where his heart beat beneath his shirt.

David reached out, pulling her into his arms with a firm grip. Leaning down, he whispered into her ear, his voice deep and commanding.
“Forget the word ‘love.‘ That’s not what this is about.”
