“How’s that? Pretty exciting, huh?” Stanley asked, leading her to the best spot and pointing to the cars zooming below.
Quinlyn nodded slowly,
She’d been in cars with criminals before, sometimes even hiding in the trunk just to track them. When the car sped up, it was like every bump jolted her, and her heart raced like crazy.
Seeing her eyes locked on the cars, Stanley thought she was into it. He grinned and added, “Til do a couple of laps for you so you can see how it’s really done.”
But Quinlyn shook her head firmly and said in a serious tone, “It’s too dangerous,”
She couldn’t understand why anyone would want to drive that fast without being ready for a high–speed chase.
“Don’t worry. I come here all the time. The track is super safe, Stanley assured her, clearly enjoying how worried she was. His own excitement just kept growing.
Her trust in Larry as a friend had sparked his competitive side. Now, he was determined to show her who the real pro was on
the track.
As he turned to look for Larry, he spotted him in the stands below, clearly arguing with someone.
Stanley frowned. He quickly turned back to Quinlyn and ordered, “Stay here. I’ll go check it out.”
Without another word, he dashed off, his long legs carrying him quickly across the stands.
Quinlyn, not tall enough to see what was going on, could only hear some voices. Stepping out of the stands, she walked down the corridor and leaned against the railing for a better view. Down below, she saw Larry face–to–face with a group of
guys.
There were about seven or eight men in their thirties, all rough around the edges. Tattoos peeked from under their sleeves, and their eyes screamed trouble.
“Larry, don’t do anything stupid,’ Stanley said, grabbing Larry’s arm to stop him from getting any closer. “This is your place. If you don’t want to race, no one can force you. Just get them to leave.”
Before Larry could say anything, the group of men burst into laughter.
“No race? Fine. But from now on, the mountain road track’s reputation is ruined. Larry’s known for taking on anyone, but it looks like he only picks easy fights, the bald guy at the front sneered, a smug grin stretching across his face..
Larry’s face hardened, and he shrugged Stanley’s hand off his arm. Taking a step forward, he said, “Who are you calling a kid? Let’s race. One round for 30 thousand. Today, I’m taking all your money.”
The bald guy’s grin only got wider. “Alright, I admire your courage. One round it is. Let’s settle it, Larry.”
Larry narrowed his eyes, “How do you want to race?”
“One round, 300 thousand, the bald man replied confidently, clearly pushing the limit. “But here’s the thing, Larry. You gotta race yourself.”
Larry wasn’t expecting that. Still, now that the challenge was on the table, he wasn’t backing down. Without hesitation, he nodded. “Fine. But if you can’t pay up when you lose, don’t think you’ll leave here without a lesson learned.”
With that, he turned sharply and headed toward the garage, ready to gather his team.

Chapter 33
“Are you out of your mind?” Stanley shouted angrily as he rushed to catch up grabbing Larry’s shoulder and yanking him back. “Can’t you see they’re here to cause trouble? They’re after you! What are you gonna do if something goes wrong in the
- Face?”
Larry just smiled with that same careless grin on his face. “If something happens, it happens,” he said, shrugging. “If they want my life, they can come take it. I’m not worried”
“You!” Stanley’s anger flared. He was about to get exasperated, but then something stopped him. He remembered his younger days and how reckless he used to be lost and directionless. His head throbbed, the weight of the memory hitting him hand
Quinlyn stepped out from the bleachers, her eyes scanning the area. Then she saw the big guys standing by their cars, casually smoking in the dim light of the entrance.
“Boss, can you believe this kid tell for it so easily?” one of the men, the one with yellow hair, smirked as he said to the bald man. Looks like taking him out will be a piece of cake.”
The bald man took a long drag from his cigarette and snorted, “Rich kids like him don’t have a clue. They’re just lucky they were born into money”
“Exactly, the yellow–haired man agreed, kicking his cigarette out. His eyes were cold, full of malice. “If he didn’t have money, his illegitimate siblings wouldn’t have paid us to handle him.”
“It’d be perfect if we could cripple him–make sure he’s useless for the rest of his life. Those damn rich people deserve it,” he added.
The bald man glanced at him, shook his head, and warned, “Keep it together. Stick to the plan. We’re supposed to push him off the guardrail on the curve. The fall from the mountain will do the job as the client told us. No improvising.”
“Yeah, yeah. I got it.” the yellow–haired guy mumbled, scratching his head, but he reluctantly agreed.
It wasn’t until the group entered the rest area that Quinlyn stepped out from the shadows. She lingered, watching them leave with a quiet intensity.
Having spent so much time on the border, she knew the signs. She could tell who had blood on their hands.
These guys had definitely killed before.
And it sounded like they were hired to do it.
This time, their target was Larry.
Her gaze fell to her new shoes, the ones Larry had commented on, calling them “Cinderella’s glass slippers. He’d insisted they were pretty, so he’d swiped his card to buy them for her.
Larry had even bought her a fancy dress, one that was way too expensive.
At that moment, something clicked in her mind. She owed him.
She made up her mind, her eyes hardening with resolve. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a small utility knife and moved swiftly, sliding under their car.
Ten minutes later, Larry pulled up to the starting line, his car revving softly as he lined up alongside a row of professional
race cars.
This was the deal Stanley had made for him to race today,
As he watched the muscular men rushing over in their sleek machines, his nerves kicked in. He approached Larry’s car, knocked on the window, and leaned in.
Chapter 33
“Remember, stay in the middle of the track, and don’t let them get too close. If anything goes wrong, leave it to the pros- they know how to avoid danger. I’ll be watching and tell you if anything important comes up through your earpiece,” he
warned.
“Geez. I got it! Why do you have to be such a nag? You sound like my mom Larry was seriously getting fed up. He waved his hand, trying to roll up the window.
But Stanley held it open. He wasn’t done yet. Before he could say anything else, the passenger door creaked open, and someone slipped inside.
Both of them froze, then eyes widening in surprise. They turned their heads, and at the same time, they asked, “What are you doing here?”
Quinlyn calmly slid into the passenger seat, sitting up straight, her expression cool and confident. I’m here to keep an eye on Larry. He’s not listening to you.”
Stanley and Larry exchanged a look of disbelief. Neither of them could believe what they were hearing. Quinlyn was the one they least expected to take charge here.
Stanley’s head felt like it was about to explode. He knew Quinlyn could be stubborn, but he was doing his best to stay calm. “Look, you need to listen to me. I’ll find someone else to watch over him, alright? Get out of the car.”
Quinlyn remained firmly seated, unfazed. She shook her head slowly, her voice firm with defiance. “No. They can’t do it. Only I can
You… Stanley was about to get mad.
Now Larry understood why Stanley had been so nagging. Chuckling to himself, he looked over at the troublemaker sitting next to him. He reached over and tugged lightly on a lock of her slightly messy hair.
“Just so you know, I have a reputation for driving crazy. Don’t start crying if you get scared,” he warned.
However, Quinlyn had already reached for the seatbelt, strapping herself in without hesitation. She turned to look at him. her big, wide eyes full of innocence, and she replied, “With me here, you won’t do anything reckless,”
