As rumbling thunder suddenly echoed through the air, Quinlyn was leading everyone out. This time, she didn’t turn on the light strips; the forest was pitch black, and they were moving slowly.

“I wonder if the other students have made it out,” Warren said, helping Quinlyn by supporting Stanley on either side.

“They should be fine. The magnetic field may look scary, but it just makes people faint. A good meal afterward will set everything right,” Larry chimed in from the side.

Just as he finished speaking, Michael gave him a light smack on the back of his head. “You think this isn’t dangerous enough? Next time you act out, I’ll let your grandpa put you in time–out.”

“Okay, okay! I get it, Uncle!” Larry quickly apologized, feeling a bit wrongly accused. “I really came here to win the championship, not to get myself killed. Now I’m just trying to stay alive.”

Michael’s expression softened at that. “Well, your grandpa is at the foot of the mountain. Don’t make him worry anymore.”

Larry pressed his lips together, lowering his voice. “I know.”

After coming down from the mountain roads, he’d decided to start living a more sensible life. After narrowly escaping danger, it was time to stop acting reckless.

Seeing Quinlyn only strengthened his resolve. “When we get back, I’ll join the training in the backyard.”

Michael paused, surprised at Larry’s newfound maturity, and a flicker of approval crossed his face. He supported Larry’s arm more firmly as they continued walking with light laughter and chatter.

Suddenly, a flash of light erupted ahead.

With a deafening crack, a nearby tree was struck by lightning, instantly charred and engulfed in flames.

The sheer power of nature left them speechless, and those with lighter nerves even found themselves jumping back, some trembling and falling to the ground.

“We must’ve walked into a thunderstorm area,” Quinlyn said, pulling out her compass. It spun wildly, its needle compic.cy unreliable. Without a moment’s hesitation, she turned and led them to retreat in the opposite direction.

Throughout their earlier trek, she had kept an eye out for shelter. Not far off to the side, there was a cave. Once everyone was inside, they sat huddled together, relying on the anti–magnetic device’s power to keep the storm at bay.

Continuous flashes of light illuminated the cave entrance, while the roars of thunder felt like they could shatter their eardrums. As the smell of charcoal wafted in, everyone tensed up, their faces paling with fear.

Stanley and Larry held onto Quinlyn’s hands, each thinking how if she had arrived an hour later, they would be out there as live targets.

Realizing this, they instinctively sheltered her, their bodies hovering above hers, gritting their teeth with regret.

“This is all my fault for making you come in here. If lightning strikes, I’ll take the hit,” Stanley said.

“And me! It must’ve been my grandpa who asked you to come. Quinlyn, you’ve saved me twice now. From now on, my life belongs to you,” Larry added.

Quinlyn found herself sandwiched between them, feeling like a cocooned bug. What had started off as nervousness was now suffocated by an overwhelming sensation. She couldn’t help but elbow them, breaking free from their protective hold.

It was autumn, the air dry and crisp, with sparks from the fire likely igniting everything in the storm–affected area.

His warning made everyone aware of the smell of burning grass and wood wafting through the air. The thought of roasting alive sent them spiraling back into panic.

Should they risk being struck by lightning to flee? No one dared to answer. In the face of nature, they felt all too small.

Quinlyn crouched low at the cave entrance, waved her hand in the air, and sniffed her fingertips before turning back. Her voice was steady as she said, “It’s going to rain soon. We’ll stay here.”

Quinlyn had a way of speaking straightforwardly–no beating around the bush, no ambiguity. Sometimes it sounded a bit cocky, but in this moment, her certainty made everyone feel a bit more secure.

The Hill family members fully trusted her, and Warren did too.

After another crash of thunder, the sky poured down heavy rain. The rain washed away the smell of smoke, and everyone leaned back against the cave walls, feeling a mix of relief and lingering unease.

“Knowledge is power! I need to read more; otherwise, I might not even know how I’m going to die,” Larry said, leaning against the wall, clutching his racing heart. He was genuinely grateful Quinlyn was there.

Now fully convinced, everyone began to ask Quinlyn when they could leave.

“We’ll wait until the rain stops,” Quinlyn said, surrounded by the group but focused on her own task. She relatively dry spot and said, “We need to start a fire to last the night.”

The moment she spoke, everyone jumped into action. Starting a fire was simple enough, and pretty soon, a campfire flickered to life in the cave, with some sand piled at the entrance to block the water.

Once they settled down and relaxed, the students‘ stomachs started growling.

Stanley felt the worst, his stomach practically glued to his back. Unfortunately, his bag was empty; everything had fallen out along the way. “When I got here, I was so dizzy, I couldn’t manage even a sip of water. I didn’t even notice my backpack was empty.”

He remembered rushing to mark the way, tying fabric strips desperately, while he’d been in a daze. And since he was the one leading the group most of the time; he had expended the most energy–his face still bore a pallor.

Michael and the others had brought some food, but it wasn’t much. Once they divided it, they quickly ran out. “We’re not hungry; you guys eat up. We’ll head down after sunrise,” they said, used to enduring hunger as part of their training.

Warren tried to give his share to Quinlyn, but she shook her head, refusing. “I’m not hungry. You eat it,” she said, poking at the fire with a stick.

Warren felt a twinge of disappointment and swallowed his food with a wry smile.

He thought Quinlyn still hadn’t forgiven him. However, Quinlyn only thought he needed to replenish his energy, and she had other things on her mind.

That night, after everyone fell asleep, Quinlyn walked quietly to the cave entrance, sat down with her backpack, and kept at watchful eye on the rain outside.

The rain didn’t stop until dawn, the light breaking through to cast its glow on Quinlyn. She stirred slightly and quickly woke from a light sleep. Going over to Michael and Stanley, she called softly, “We need to get moving”
