There was a brief silence in the tent. Curtis lightly tapped his fingers on the armrest, still smiling. I know, Ivan told me. You had no choice but to pull the trigger. The detective team should be giving you a medal for that.”
What he didn’t say was that the detective team had decided not to hold Quinlyn responsible for the abbot’s death. The report from 901st Division would also leave out Quinlyn’s shooting of the criminal.
A ten–year–old firing a gun, no matter how accurate, left an impression that was definitely not positive.
“But…” Quinlyn lowered her eyes, her long, curled lashes casting a small shadow on her face. Her tone wasn’t afraid, just puzzled. “At the time, I didn’t know if I should kill him.”
Curtis was surprised, not knowing what she said for a moment.
“Everyone said I shot because I saw the bad guy about to attack, but that’s not really it,” Quinlyn confessed, being totally honest with Curtis. Her eyes fixed on a point as she slipped into her memories.
Quinlyn murmured, “I just knew he was doing wrong, and if he died, more people could be saved. But I didn’t know when it’s okay for someone to die or how big their mistake has to be for it to be fair.”
Every time she mentioned death, it sounded like a child’s innocent remarks, but only Quinlyn understood the weight of those words, having faced such dilemmas many times in the borderlands over the years.
Some people wanted to across the town, crying and begging for mercy, telling how tough life was for them. Quinlyn’s heart softened, and she let them go. But as soon as they turned away, they killed a cop.
Others, with their wives and children, claimed they were seeking medical help. But when stopped at the borderlands, they recklessly caused others‘ deaths.
Quinlyn never went to school. The only one who ever taught her anything was Matthew, but he passed away too soon. And the kind–hearted Fiona lost her mind. So, many times, Quinlyn had to figure things out on her own.
She had sit on the rooftop, looked at the stars, and thought, ‘Would no one have died if I hadn’t guided that family? Would the officer still be alive if I had just killed those people right away?”
The borderlands were chaotic; lives weren’t worth much. Even she was considered worthless. But since arriving here, people cared for and loved her.

Some chose to hide her for her safety, and others would scold her because of her reckless behavior. It seemed like her life had gained some value in others‘ eyes.
So today in the woods, she didn’t shoot immediately because she was thinking. The abbot was probably the young monk’s father; they looked so much alike. If the abbot died, the young monk would be devastated. But the abbot did wrong and could endanger more lives.
The more her thoughts raced, the more confused she became. When she finally pulled the trigger, she looked down at the young monk’s tears. They conveyed pain, despair, sadness, and grief, just like the tears Elowyn shed when hugging her at the foot of the mountain.
Curtis suddenly reached out, placing his large hand gently on her head, softly stroking it. “Oh, so this is what’s troubling you. You’re just a kid.”
Quinlyn tilted her head slightly, feeling puzzled. She was only ten, obviously a child, but everyone would point it out.
Little did she know, when they said she was a kid, it was a compliment. It referred to the inherent goodness of human nature, the rightness what adults had long forgotten about, the precious value of life, and the pure emotion that was truly admirable.

“Quinlyn, if you want to know about this, join the training at the base. You don’t have to formally enlist, you’re too young for that. Just attend classes like you do at the Wilson residence. Curtis relented.
He truly appreciated Quinlyn’s rare nature, with a secret desire to guide her towards serving the country. At the Wilson residence, it was just about teaching her skills, but at the base, she would see more of the world.
Quinlyn nodded eagerly upon hearing this; she was worried about not having a place to learn. She added, “Can I learn how to shoot?” as she pointed to the gun on the table, clearly interested.
“Sure. Once you’ve learned, you can take down targets like a pro, Curtis laughed, giving her a couple of strong pats on the shoulder, feeling very pleased. Later, he planned to brag to Edward, Leonard, and Danny in a phone call.
Quinlyn didn’t realize that she had given Curtis a reason to show off. Relaxing, she polished the dinner and then fell asleep on the table.
She slept for two whole days and nights, alarming Elowyn so much that she called the family doctor three times each day. The Hill family, the James family, and even Edward brought their own doctors.
With everyone gathered around Quinlyn, they ultimately ended up with a diagnosis that left them at a loss for words- Quinlyn was simply tired out.
“I’m staying here to keep watch,” Stanley said, with his arm in a sling, determined not to leave.
Larry, following along with his usual charm, sweet–talked Elowyn directly, “Elowyn, can I have a room to stay in?”
Hearing this, the other elders felt a bit envious. Being young and bold had its advantages, while they couldn’t find an excuse to stay and could only ask to be notified first with any updates on Quinlyn.
In the following two days, the doors of the Wilson residence were left wide open. Various people came in droves–experts working with the Wilsons, leaders from Manldon International School, the chairman of the DigitalKey Group, and senior members from the detective team and the military.
Zaid, who built his business from scratch with a straightforward, hardworking approach, met more influential people in one day than he had in his entire life. Luckily, Claude dropped by with Mandy to help entertain the guests, sparing him a lot of hassle.
In the kitchen, Zaid hid away and accidentally encountered Claude, who was discreetly wiping sweat off his brow. After an awkward laugh, they both couldn’t help but express relief.
“Quinlyn is truly remarkable.” Claude chuckled. “If Mr. Ramirez wasn’t there to keep things under control, those folks might have spirited her away in a sack overnight.” Recalling the eager expressions of the big shots made Claude laugh.
Zaid wiped the sweat off his forehead and said helplessly, “Isn’t that the truth? Now when I head out, all the neighbors ask about my family situation, and I have no idea how to explain it to them.”
“You’ve really gotten lucky, haven’t you?” Claude felt a sense of camaraderie and was genuinely happy for Zaid. Meeting those important people was usually hard, but now they were handing out business cards. It was like winning the networking jackpot.
“I never intended to use that child for anything.” Zaid thought back to their first encounter in the hospital, marveling at the twist of fate and feeling disdain for Maurice. “I heard Maurice goes to Mr. Anderson’s mansion every day, begging for a reconciliation with Mr. Sullivan from DigitalKey Group.”
Upon hearing this, Claude sneered disdainfully, “What a coward, hitting his wife and kids. Doesn’t he have
