Chapter 109
Relax, Tina replied,” I’ll check“. She scanned our surroundings through the window. Nothing’s out there, she assured me, but the tension continued as I tried to convince myself that everything was fine.
I took a deep breath. Maybe I was just being paranoid.
Later in the day, I stepped into the living room. Cyrus was playing happily with his toys. He looked up and grinned. “Hey, buddy!” I said, smiling back. As he giggled, I opened my inbox, scrolling through the backlog of emails waiting for me.
One email stood out: a formal invitation to the prestigious Global Industry Summit, hosted by a major company in my field. The event promised to be impressive and important, and I couldn’t resist the feeling that I should go. I quickly dialed Blair, needing a second opinion. “Doris! What’s up?” he answered, cheerful as always. “Hey, I got invited to that big industry event,” I said. “Do you think I should go?”
There
here was a pause on the other end. Then he replied, “Honestly, I’d focus on finishing what you’re working on now. Don’t rush into broadening things too soon. Take it one step at a time.” I let out a long breath, understanding his perspective, but a part of me was still drawn to the opportunity. Then, uncomfortably, my thoughts drifted to Carlos. The idea of running into him felt embarrassing, especially with how things had been between us lately. I almost wanted to leave the city entirely to avoid any awkwardness.
“You’re right, Blair,” I said, though my voice was hesitant. “But I think I’m still going to go. 11 regret it if I don’t.” Blair sighed, his tone understanding. “Alright, just be sure you’re ready. Don’t overwhelm yourself.”
“Thanks, Blair,” I said, hanging up. I looked down at Cyrus, who was still busy with his toys. Suddenly, it hit me, I couldn’t just leave him behind without a place to stay. “Cyrus, how would you like to come with me this time?”
He looked up excitedly, “Really? I get to go with you?”
I grinned, nodding. “Yes, you’re coming with me. We’ll make it an adventure together.”

He started packing his things and seemed eager to follow me on my business trip. I couldn’t help but smile at his energy. Just as we were about to leave the house, I opened the door and found Carlos standing there, looking upset.“Doris, where are you taking Cyrus?” he asked with concern. “I’m taking him on a business trip,” I replied calmly. “It’s perfectly fine.”
“You can’t just take him out of town like this,” Carlos said frustratingly. “What if something happens?”
“I’m his guardian,” I reminded him, my voice firm. “I can take him wherever the wolf law allows.” Carlos replied, “But what about me? I’m his guardian too. And that is not the case”
He looked troubled, his expression showing that he felt excluded from the decision. “But what if” “Why are you talking to me in such an unfriendly manner right now?” he asked, clearly hurt. I felt lost, and my thoughts drifted to Odette, the wonderful young woman who seemed perfect for him. I glanced at Carlos, and a pang hit me; he really was a perfect
match for someone like her.
“Cyrus is stable now,” I added softly. “We won’t be out for long. We’ll contact you when we get back.”
Carlos opened his mouth to reply but just shook his head, looking defeated. “Fine. Just… be
careful.”
He stepped back, allowing us to pass. My heart grew heavy as I walked away. I picked up
Cyrus and we headed to the car. He was still buzzing with excitement, blissfully unaware of
the situation.
When we arrived at the airport, I held Cyrus’s hand tightly.“You’re going to love this trip!” I told him, trying to keep my spirits high. “I can’t wait!” he exclaimed.
After we checked in, we moved to the boarding area.
I took Cyrus to the plane, holding his hand tightly as we made our way down the aisle. He looked up at me. I sensed he could feel my underlying criticism about the trip. “I’ll be with
you
forever” he said softly, trying to comfort me.
I couldn’t help but smile at his sweet words. I leaned down and kissed his forehead, “I know, buddy. I’m glad you’re here with me.”

bust as I stood back up, the plane’s alarm blared through the cabin, a sharp sound that sent A folt of panic through me. My heart raced as I scanned the faces around us. Suddenly, at couple of rogue wolf hijackers sprang up from their seats, their intentions clear.
“Everyone stay calm!” one of them shouted, but the fear in his voice didn’t reassure anyone. 1 was caught in the chaos of an accidental plane robbery.
