Chapter 129
His words hit me like a shockwave. A wave of confusion crashed over me. I stared at him, trying to process what he had just said. “Candy?” I repeated, my voice trembling.
It didn’t make sense. And yet, deep down, it felt like it should. Something about it grabbed my attention, pulling out memories I had buried long ago. I closed my eyes and tried to think. Then it hit me. The memory flooded back in an instant.
I had met a boy once, years ago. He was weak, sick, and alone. He had asked me for candy; just a simple piece. I remembered how he had been lying in a hospital bed, looking as though he had no one in the world to care for him. I was sad at that time too. Nathan had been spending so much time with Sienna, and Oliver had been so ill. I felt so alone.
But that boy, Merhold, had shown up when I least expected it. He had been the only one to try and make me smile. He had been the only one to bring me some comfort in a world that had been so cruel.
“Wait,” I said slowly, the realization coming to me. “You… you were the boy at the hospital, weren’t you?”
Merhold’s eyes lit up with delight, and a huge grin broke out across his face. “You finally remember me, Doris!” His voice was filled with joy, as though this was the best thing that had happened in years.
He looked like a different person now, standing before me tall and strong. But I could still see the boy he had been, the boy who had been so fragile, with no one to care for him.
I took a step back, my heart racing. “But you were so different. You were just a teenager You had nothing, no one. How did you… how did you grow into this?”
Merhold’s smile faltered for a moment, and his eyes became distant. “I didn’t have anyone. My mother was sick, and my father was… well, he was always busy with his career. He didn’t care about me or her. I had to take care of myself, Doris. It was tough, and I had no one but myself.”
looked at him, seeing him in a new light. I remembered how weak he had looked, how

lost. But now, standing in front of me, he was different. He was powerful. He had a fire in
him that I hadn’t seen before.
“I’m sorry,” I said softly, my voice filled with regret. I hadn’t known what he had been going through. I hadn’t realized how much he had suffered alone. He had been alone just like me. I hadn’t been able to see it theh, but now I understood“.
Merhold looked at me, his expression unreadable. For a long time, he didn’t say anything. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and serious. “It’s not your fault, Doris. I don’t blame you. But now, I’m here. And I won’t let anyone hurt you again. I’m going to make sure you’re happy. No one will ever make you cry again. I swear it.”
I stared at him, stunned by his words. It felt like a promise, but could I trust him? Could I
trust anyone after everything that had happened?
“You don’t have to do this,” I whispered, looking at Sienna as she writhed in pain. “I don’t
want anyone else to suffer. Please, don’t do anything reckless.”
Merhold stepped closer, his eyes intense. “I don’t care about Sienna’s suffering. She deserves
every bit of this. But that’s not why I’m doing this, Doris. I’m doing this because I made a promise to you. You’re mine to protect now. And I’m going to protect you, no matter the
cost.”
His words felt like a promise that went deeper than anything I could have imagined. It
wasn’t just about vengeance. It was about something else. Something that had been
building up for years, something I couldn’t ignore. He wasn’t just fighting for me. He was
fighting with me.
I shook my head, my heart torn. “I can’t let you do that. I can’t let you hurt anyone, even if
it’s for me.”
Merhold’s expression softened, and for a moment, it looked like he was reconsidering. But then, his face hardened again, and he said, “I won’t hurt anyone unless it’s necessary. But I won’t stand by and watch you suffer anymore. I will do whatever it takes to bring you back
to Cyrus. I’ll find a way to reunite you.”
I felt my heart pound. Cyrus. The name felt like a lifeline. The man I had loved, the man I had lost, the one who had been ripped away from me. Could Merhold really do what he said? Could he really bring me back to Cyrus?

don’t know how to trust you,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I want to believe you, but I don’t know if I can.”
Merhold took a step closer, his voice soft but firm. “You don’t have to trust me now. You don’t have to believe in me yet. But I will show you, Doris. I will show you that I can protect you. I’ll bring Cyrus back to you. You’ll be together again. I promise.”
His words made something inside me shift. A small spark of hope ignited in my chest. I didn’t know how he was going to do it, or if it was even possible.
Merhold reached out and touched my shoulder gently, his grip firm but comforting. “I won’t
let you down,” he said quietly, but his voice was full of conviction. “You’ll be with Cyrus again. I’ll make sure of it.”
