Chapter 139
Cyrus’s eyes sparkled with happiness. “I missed you too! Nathan’s been taking care of me, but I’m so glad you’re coming back. We can play together again, right?”
I
nodded, a smile appeared on my lips. “Of course, sweetheart. We’ll do everything you love when I’m there.” My voice faltered slightly as I continued, “Nathan… thank you for taking care of him.”
Nathan’s voice came from somewhere off–screen, hesitant but sincere. “It’s been my honor, Doris. He’s an amazing kid.”
I could hear the nervousness in his tone, as if he wanted to say more but wasn’t sure how I’d respond.
He shifted closer to the camera. “Doris, I…” he started, but then stopped, uncertain. I knew he wanted to talk, but I didn’t have the energy to address everything now.
*Instead, I offered a small smile. “We’ll talk soon, Nathan. I’m grateful for everything you’ve
done for Cyrus.” His eyes flickered, and he simply nodded.
Just as I ended the call, the sound of Carlos’s boots echoed across the plane floor, shattering the quiet.
He walked past me with purposeful strides, his face unreadable as always, and settled into a seat by the window. Without a word, he stared outside, his focus somewhere far beyond the horizon.
The hum of the engines grew louder as the plane began its ascent. Carlos was headed home, leaving the battlefield behind.
I leaned back in my seat, my thoughts on Cyrus, my heart heavy with unresolved emotions. All I could think about was the reunion, but I could still feel him near me.
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. Carlos stood at the door of the small compartment, a slight smile on his face. “Mind if I join you?”
I shook my head and gestured for him to enter. As Carlos settled into the seat beside me, I

noticed my heart beat quicken.
“Carlos cleared his throat, his gaze on the window as he prepared to speak. “You’re probably
wondering how we got to this point,” he said, his voice low and almost hesitant.
I turned to him, feeling the distance between us but also something else. It was something that made my heart beat just a little faster. “Maybe. But for now, I just want to get home.”
Carlos nodded. Just then, his wolf, and my wolf seemed to sense each other, their presence like a low hum vibrating through the space.
Iglanced at Carlos, noticing the way he was looking at me. His focus was sharp, his eyes.
intense.
Suddenly, the space between us felt smaller, as if the world outside the plane had ceased to
exist.
The scent of the forest, the ocean air, the earth itself seemed to mingle between us. I couldn’t help it. I leaned a little closer, feeling an unexpected pull.
“Carlos shifted slightly, his hand brushing against mine, his fingers lingering there just long
enough for me to feel the warmth radiating from him.
The air between us charged, and I swallowed hard, unsure of how to process the sudden shift in our dynamic..
“You smell…” He trailed off, his voice rough. “I don’t know… comforting.” I looked at him, a soft laugh escaping my lips. “Comforting?”
He grinned slightly. “Maybe that sounds strange, but I don’t know. I can’t help but feel drawn to you.”
The words were simple, but they sent a strange flutter through my chest. “You’re not the
only one,” I admitted softly.
Carlos’s expression shifted, becoming more serious. He looked at me, his hand now fully covering mine, and for a moment, I couldn’t look away. “Why did you never say anything
before?”
exhaled slowly, my gaze dropping to our entwined hands. “I guess I was afraid. Afraid of what it would mean, and… maybe afraid of getting hurt again.”
His thumb brushed across my knuckles gently, his voice quieter. “I can understand that.”
There was a silence, the plane’s hum surrounding us. I was acutely aware of the soft contact between our hands, the closeness, and the attraction that seemed to intensify by the
second.
I turned my head to meet his eyes again. “Carlos… Do you really think we can figure this. out? Everything between us, I mean.”
He hesitated for a moment, then leaned closer, his breath warm against my skin. “I think we can,” he said. “But we need time. And I’m willing to do whatever it takes to understand what’s going on inside your head.”
My heart skipped a beat at his words. Without thinking, I reached out, placing a hand on his chest. “I’m willing to try too.”
And then, before either of us could stop it, our lips met. It wasn’t a hurried kiss, but one that *remained, full of questions, hope, and perhaps even a touch of fear.
But the warmth between us made it feel like the only thing that mattered in that moment.
