Maximus, Diana, and Adele arrived home. Little Adele was completely exhausted–her day out had been long and tiring. For Maximus, spending time with his granddaughter filled his heart and eased the anxiety of what was coming.
Laura heard her father arrive and immediately left her room to see him.
“Dad?” Laura asked as she stepped into Adele’s room.
“My girl, we thought you were already asleep, so we didn’t want to wake you. We just brought Adele straight to her room.”

Laura had a knot in her stomach. She would have preferred not to say anything about what had happened, but she knew Alice probably wouldn’t let the matter rest. She had spent the evening thinking about it and decided it was better for her father not to be caught off guard. So, she had made up her mind–she would only tell him about today’s incident.
“Alright, we’re in the kitchen now. Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” Maximus asked, intrigued by the
situation.
“Okay…” Laura sighed as she put a kettle on with water and cinnamon.
“What happened? Did that man treat you badly?”
“No, he didn’t. We had a calm conversation, and I laid out my conditions for him to see my daughter. But the problem started when his wife showed up.”

“His wife is from the George family. Her name is Alice–Alice George. She was my classmate at the school you transferred me from…”
“Hmm… I see.” Maximus didn’t say anything else, but he immediately suspected this had something to do with why Laura had left that school. She had always been reluctant to talk about it. “So, what happened?”
“Oh, Dad! I don’t know what got into me. She started saying awful things about Adele, and I just… I got so angry. I think I lost control.”
“You lost control?”
“Yeah… I slapped her and then threatened her.”
“Laura! Where was Benson?”
“He arrived, don’t blame him, but I don’t think even he could’ve stopped me. The way she spoke about Adele infuriated me… Dad, I said a lot of things, but you know I’d never actually hurt anyone. Well… okay, I did pull her hair a little, but that’s it.”
Maximus looked at his daughter. She seemed genuinely worried and scared. She was definitely no longer the shy little girl who had come to him just over a year ago. She was growing up–no longer a child, but a young woman learning to navigate the world.
