While Leonard and Peter were reconciling as father and son, trying to leave the past behind, Catherine reluctantly had to put on a land face. She kept thinking that if she didn’t maintain a cordial relationship with her grandson’s future wife, she’d have to say goodbye to spending time with her great–grandchild. She felt trapped, but she was willing to make the effort. After all, she genuinely appreciated the fact that her family was growing, and the thought of a baby was the only thing keeping her anger in check. “Alexia, how far along is the baby?” Catherine asked hesitantly, trying to break the ice. “Grandma Catherine, the baby is 16 weeks! It’s already so big,” Alexia said cheerfully.
“I see! I’m glad to hear the critical weeks are behind you. That’s very important.” “That’s exactly what my mom says!”
“What do you mean by that, Grandma?” Maximus asked, confused.
“Maximus, my boy, you need to learn more about this. The critical weeks are the first three months. That’s when pregnancy is risky. Once you’re past that, it’s mostly about growth.”
“Oh, I see! I didn’t know that,” Maximus said, feeling a twinge of guilt.
While he’d been busy sorting out his divorce with Mary, he hadn’t realized that Alexia had gone through the most critical part of her pregnancy practically on her own. He couldn’t help feeling miserable. He’d never been able to show Mary love, and now, even though he was supposedly with the woman of his dreams, he was neglecting her too.
“See, love? We made it past the critical part! Now you understand all my mood swings!” Alexia said enthusiastically.
Maximus managed a small smile. It was an awkward day for him. Running into Mary at his
grandmother’s house hadn’t been easy, especially with her standing next to Peter. And now, seeing his future wife four months pregnant only added to his guilt.
“Maximus, Alexia, excuse me for a moment. I’m going to check on the food preparations in the kitchen, “Catherine said.
“Of course, Grandma!”
After she went inside, Alexia turned to Maximus and said, “See? And you didn’t even want to bring me. Grandma looks so happy about our baby!” Her face beamed with satisfaction.
“Alexia, I know I’ve left you alone through all of this, but I want you to know I’m going to do everything
to adjust to this new stage in our lives.”
“Love, I know! I also know you’re not used to these things, but little by little, we’ll both adapt to our pregnancy.”
Maximus sighed, watching as the mother of his child lovingly stroked her small belly. Today, Alexia had deliberately chosen clothes that highlighted her bump, She was fully aware that Mary would be there, and it was important to make it clear that she was the one carrying Maximus’s child.

Peter’s phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket and, seeing who was calling, decided to take the call in private.
“Father, I need to take this call outside,” he said, answering and heading to the back garden.
“Of course, son! Don’t worry…” his father replied calmly.
Leonard watched as his son left the study to take the call. He stayed behind, gazing out the window. In the front garden, Mary and her grandfather were sitting together. A smile spread across Leonard’s face as a tear rolled down his cheek.
“Thank you, my dear Martina. I know you’ve helped us reconcile today. Only you know how proud I am of our children.”
