Valerie arrived at the hospital, more composed now. She was wearing an oxygen mask, which helped her breathe more easily. Sedatives weren’t an option due to her advanced pregnancy, but the supplemental oxygen stabilized her. It was only then that she truly realized the gravity of her actions. She had risked the lives of her babies for someone who no longer cared about her. Tears welled in her eyes as the weight of her decisions bore down on her.
While she wiped away her tears, her gynecologist, Dr. Hill, entered. Marcus had already called her and explained the situation, so she had an idea of what needed to be done.
“Hello, Valerie! Are we making a habit of meeting like this?‘
“Hi, Dr. Hill… I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to hurt my babies….t’s just…” Valerie struggled to get her words out.
“Let’s check on your little ones. Your husband is on his way so everything will be fine. Most likely, you’ll just need to rest properly, and everything will be okay.”
“My husband is coming?”
“Yes, he’s the one who called me,” the doctor replied with a hint of doubt. “Valerie, are you having problems with him? Is there something you’d like to share? I can help if you’re going through something.”
Valérie understood the Implication and felt a pang of guilt. Marcus wasn’t to blame for any of this, but she could see why the doctor might think so. After all, this was her second hospital visit in a short time.
“No, no! How could you think that?”
“Valerie, you’ve come to the hospital twice now, both times in distress. The first time, I understood–it was for your child. But this time? What’s going on?”
“I had a… complicated situation, and I didn’t know how to handle it. But I’ll recover, you’ll see. I’m just worried. about my babies. How are they?” Valerie’s voice trembled.
“That’s what we’re about to find out. Let me check with the ultrasound,” Dr. Hill said, applying the gel and preparing the equipment. “Let’s see… there they are. Everything looks fine. They’re sleeping–look, their little hearts are beating normally.”
“Really? They’re okay?”
“Yes. I came to check on your babies, and they’re perfectly line. However, I’m going to have one of my colleagues examine you further. If necessary, they’ll prescribe something or recommend steps to manage your anxiety.”
“Thank you, doctor!”
As Dr. Hill was finishing up, her phone buzzed. A new patient, a young woman with bleeding and a possible pregnancy, had arrived in the emergency room.
“I need to stabilize my patient here first, and then I’ll head to the ER,” she told the caller before turning to Valerie.
“I have another patient to attend to, but I’ll finish up here first. Based on the ultrasound, everything is fine. Your babies are healthy, but you, Valerie, need to rest. My colleague will be here soon to help with your anxiety.”
Just as the doctor was about to leave, Marcus walked in. His face was pale, his expression a mix of worry and exhaustion.
“Valerie, how are you, my love? Doctor, how are my children?” Marcus asked, clearly distressed.
“Sir, everything is fine. But you need to calm down, or you’ll be the next patient we admit, and you don’t look like someone who can afford that right now,” the doctor said sternly.

“Marcus, calm down. The babies are fine. The doctor just finished checking them. Another doctor will come to see me soon,” Valerie said, guilt weighing on her.
“I’ll leave you two alone to talk. I’m sorry I can’t stay longer, but I need to check on the new patient,” Dr. Hill said before leaving.
With the doctor gone, Marcus’s calm façade began to crack. He stood near the window, avoiding eye contact with his wife as he struggled to control his emotions.
“Valerie, will you finally tell me what you were doing at Peter’s house?” Marcus asked, his voice tight with forced patience.
