Marcus had taken a shower and gone straight to bed. The day had been long and exhausting, and as soon as his head hit the pillow, he fell asleep. The next morning, the sunlight streaming through the window woke him. For a
moment,
he forgot where he was. Instinctively, he reached for the other side of the bed, only to find it empty, bringing him back to reality.
“Marcus, can I come in?” Frederick called from outside the door.
“Yes…” Marcus responded groggily,
“How are you feeling?”
“Sleeping…”
“Marcus!” Frederick exclaimed, annoyed.
“You asked,” Marcus replied with a small smirk..
“I meant how you’re feeling emotionally, but I can see you’re not too bad off.”

“Come on, get up. Breakfast is ready. There’s nothing like filling an empty stomach. And don’t think I didn’t notice–yesterday, you and Maximus wanted to finish all my alcohol reserves, but you barely ate.”
“That reminds me of the little problem we have hanging over us…” Marcus said, sitting up.
“Well, we just need to hand the company back to Maximus, and that’s that.”
“But Maximus handed the company over to me. How does that sound?” Marcus replied with a dry laugh. “I’ll talk to Darius and ask him to explain how we can legally reverse it.”
“Yes, please do!”
“Maximus said he would talk to Alden, right?”
“Yeah. You know, when I think about that boy, he reminds me so much of his father. His drive to conquer world, his eagerness to learn–there’s no doubt he’s the best version of Peter.”

“Alden is a great kid. His father… well, not so much. But not because he doesn’t want to be. Without his memories, it’s hard to know who’s good and who’s not.”
“Are you defending him now?”
“No! But think about it. Without his memories, Peter didn’t know who anyone was. It’s easy to hurt people you don’t recognize, like when we hunted down everyone responsible for your family’s deaths.”
“That was different!”
“Not so much…” Frederick said with a shrug.
“They were following orders, and the one who gave the order is still alive. And you’ve been merciful to him.”
“It’s not mercy… I’m not proud of what I did.”
“Exactly! And Peter could say the same. Without his memores, he followed his emotions, piecing things together

“Don’t defend him. He did it to hurt us deliberately,” Marcus said, his frustration evident.
“Of course that was his intention! But think about it–Peteris like a wounded pup. He felt attacked and lashed out. That’s how I see it, anyway.”
“Well, if there’s one good thing about that investigation, it’s that it put us on alert. Now we know something is going to happen. The only question is when. Leonardo has been suspiciously quiet. His payments are being sent monthly, but he hasn’t made any moves. Unless he’s had some accident or died, we can’t rest easy. And I don’t think fate is kind to people like him.”
“Maximus seemed very calm yesterday, as if he already knew what to do. Maybe he has a plan in place, don’t you think?”
“I don’t know. Let’s go eat. Thinking about this stuff on an empty stomach is giving me heartburn.”
“Your coffee is ready, just the way you like it,” Frederick said with a smile.
“Thanks, Frederick. You know, I’ve never told you this, but you’re like a father to me.”
“Thank you, Marcus. And you’re like the son I never had. It hurts to see you like this, but remember–we’ve been through worse than this before.”
