Celeste had heard the name Mary before. She didn’t know who it was, but it was obvious it was a woman, someone with whom Peter had likely spent all this time.
Celeste sat down on the bed, the same one that had kept her company during the months when she couldn’t walk. One of her hands pressed against her chest, both her hands trembling, her whole body shaking. She didn’t know what was happening, but her stomach was in knots, and everything seemed to spin around her. The man who was there was not the Peter she knew. This wasn’t the man who had been so determined to win her over. This wasn’t hlon.
She brought both hands to her face, squeezed her eyes shut, trying not to cry. She was a grown woman. She couldn’t be crying over love, She couldn’t cry over love agalh. She had been married once before and had lost the love of her life. What was happening now was just temporary, she told herself, lying to avoid the pain.
She was locked in these thoughts when she felt the mattress sink beside her, and the warmth of a hand on her back made her jump and pull her hands away from her face. She turned and saw Peter staring at her intently.
The look in his eyes was unreadable. He just looked at her, but didn’t say anything.
Brock, after seeing her leave, entered the studio and informed Peter that Celeste had heard his conversation. Peter ended the call and threw his phone onto the chair. He knew what those words meant: he had problems, and with this, he had added another one right in his own house with the woman he considered his.
“Celeste…”
“I suppose there must be a good explanation for this…” Celeste said, staring at him intently.
He could see the torment she was going through. Her eyes were expressive, and although she tried to hide it, she couldn’t.
“Celeste… L… I know I don’t have the words to make things clear, but I just ask that you trust me. It’s not what you think,” Peter said, pulling her toward him and embracing her.
Celeste, feeling his embrace, felt the warmth of his body, something she had longed for in recent days. There was something peculiar that caught her attention. The man was wearing white clothes, and she noticed a specific scent. It wasn’t his cologne–it was a feminine scent.
She quickly pulled away from the embrace, standing up and saying, “Peter, I don’t know what’s going on with you. I’ve been waiting for more than two months for you to come home. I haven’t heard anything about you. I didn’t know if you were okay or not. You worried me, and now that you’re here, the first thing you do is lock yourself in your study.”
“You couldn’t even come find me to at least let me know you had arrived. Right now, I really don’t know who I’m talking to. I see you, but it feels like you’re not you. I hear you, and I know there’s something strange about you.”
“Celeste, it’s a bit complicated to explain, and I know things don’t look good, but I just ask that you trust me.‘
“Who is Mary? Who is she? A moment ago, you were so distressed about her, so she must be someone important. Tell me, who is she?”
Peter hadn’t expected those questions. He didn’t expect Celeste to have even heard Mary’s name. He didn’t know how to respond to those inquiries, so he simply stood up and walked out of the room without saying anything.
Celeste, seeing this, realized that talking about that woman was difficult for him. She didn’t need to be very clever to understand who was the problem. She glanced at the time on her phone–it was already 9:00 p.m. It would be crazy to go out at this hour, especially in a country she barely knew, where few spoke her language.

She walked to the window and began to cry, finally letting dut the tears she had been holding back. She knew it was over. The dream was over. She wouldn’t wait for Peter anymore, not anymore…
After crying for several minutes, she decided to take a long bath in the tub. As the water covered her body, it took away the anxiety she had been feeling. Her tears mixed with the water in the tub. Tomorrow would be another day. With the light of day, she could pack her things and leave this place. If she did it today, she would be putting
