After taking Peter in, Dr. Wagner conducted several tests, including CT scans and other scans, all to confirm his suspicions. Additionally, he asked a series of questions, and based on the answers, he discovered the very thing he had feared–the truth was right in front of him.
“Oh God… Peter Palmer has selective memory loss.”
Dr. Wagner realized from Peter’s answers that the man only remembered events up until he was nearly 25 years old.
“What’s wrong, Doc? Judging by your face, I’m guessing it’s not good news,
is it?”
Dr. Wagner glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. He knew Peter wanted answers, but deep down, he wasn’t ready to overwhelm him with everything he was missing.
“Dr. Wagner, right?”
“Yes, Mr. Palmer, what is it?”
“I want to talk to someone.”
“I understand. Do you want to see your wife, your brother, or your son?”
“No! You can’t even tell me what’s going on, and now you’re saying I have a wife, a son, and that I talk to my brother? That sounds even more ridiculous than anything I could have imagined.”
“I want Marcus Bartz! Call him!”
“Mr. Palmer, I know this is all very confusing, especially since I haven’t explained everything yet, but please, I need you to be patient…‘

“Dr. Wagner, patience, patience–I’ve been patient, and I still haven’t gotten any answers. I need to talk to my friend Bartz. Who the hell do I need to ask to make that happen?”
Dr. Wagner was trying to figure out how to handle the situation. He had known that memory loss was a possibility, but he hadn’t expected Peter to be stuck in a specific time period. Honestly, he had no logical explanation for what was happening—at least, not one that he could give the family right now.
Meanwhile, Peter kept insisting on speaking only to Marcus Bartz, the only person he remembered as family and the only one he trusted. His memories stopped a few months before he met Mary and took her into his home. He had no recollection of Mary, and as for Celeste–it was as if she had never existed.
While Dr. Wagner continued running the necessary tests, Maximus and Alden arrived at the hospital almost simultaneously. Celeste had already filled them in, leaving Alden no choice but to call his father–in–law.
“Pick up, pick up, pick up…”
“Alden?”
“Marcus… Sir… Sorry…” Alden’s voice was filled with nervousness.
Alden and Marcus had already had that conversation–the one where his father–in–law laid everything out in a way he hadn’t been able to in front of Serenity. That conversation had left Alden nervous and stressed. On one hand, Marcus seemed determined to scrutinize him for any flaws he could find, and on the other, Alden’s father needed his help and care in the hospital, as he still hadn’t woken up.
“Marcus, I know this is going to sound a little strange, but we need a favor…”

“What do you need?”
“My father woke up…” Alden exhaled some of the air he had been holding in.
“That’s good news, isn’t it? Now you can finally spend more time with my daughter…‘
“I know, Marcus! It’s just… there’s something else.”
“Then spit it out already. Quit with the suspense.”
“My father woke up, but he only wants to talk to you… I don’t have all the details yet, but from what Celeste told me, he doesn’t recognize anyone and keeps asking for you.
Marcus was caught off guard by the news that he was the only one Peter wanted to see.
“What do you want from me?”
“I need you to help us talk to him. You might have to explain some things, but I’m on my way to the hospital, and I still don’t know everything yet.”
“Alright… I’ll be there in a few minutes,” Marcus said in a flat tone.
Minutes later, Dr. Wagner entered the waiting room, where Marcus, Alden, Maximus, and Celeste were all gathered. They were all hoping the doctor could answer their questions about Peter’s condition.
“Dr. Wagner, how’s my brother?” Maximus asked, intrigued.
“Mr. Palmer, gentlemen, ma’am… We’ve run all the necessary tests, and I’ve reviewed them thoroughly, over and over again. Unfortunately, I can now confirm that Mr. Palmer is suffering from selective memory loss. He only remembers events up until he was 25 years old.”
“I asked him a series of questions about what he remembers, and the last thing he recalls is a dinner in New York with Mr. Bartz. However, he insists that he’s 27 years old. When comparing his actual age to the year he claims to remember, there’s a two–year discrepancy. His case is quite unusual because that’s a significant amount of time to have lost.”
