The night passed quickly between kisses and caresses. Peter inhaled Celeste’s scent–her rosy fragrance gave him a deep sense of peace. Holding her close and feeling the occasional movement of their children inside her filled him with a strange pang in his chest. It wasn’t pain, nor was it anguish it was something much closer to happiness and pride,
The first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting the morning in golden hues. Celeste lay on Peter’s chest as he gently ran his fingers down her back. Her curly Hair was more unruly than usual. A sudden movement in her belly stirred him awake.
Carefully, he moved Celeste onto the pillow, taking a moment to admire her. He ran his hand over her stomach, always on the lookout for any movement. A smile crossed his face whenever he saw her skin shift. Those babies were definitely causing chaos inside–he was sure they were fighting for space.
As he rested his palm on her belly, the little ones responded with stronger kicks, as if trying to let him know they were there, that they were real. Peter was overwhelmed with pride. His children had endured their mother’s distress, survived days and nights in a cold hospital. They were strong, resilient, full of spirit. He didn’t yet know their sexes, but regardless, they were destined to be people with a strength few could match.
Gently, he pressed his ear to Celeste’s belly. That small action stirred her awake. Seeing him like that filled her with an odd sense of peace.
“What are you listening for?” Celeste asked, intrigued.
“I want to see if I can hear anything inside… I’ve already felt them, but I’d love to hear their heartbeat,” Peter said as he sat up.
“I haven’t been to the doctor this month yet. We were waiting for you to find out the sex. Do you want to go for an ultrasound? We can go anytime.‘

“Well, if we eat breakfast on the way, I think we can get there pretty quickly. What do you think?” Peter asked, his excitement evident.
“Yeah, we should get up now and leave as soon as possible.
“Alright then, let’s get moving,” Peter said, energized.
As he stood up and looked at Celeste, he turned back and stole a warm kiss from her.
“Do you know how beautiful you look? I love seeing you like this…”
“Like this? How?”
“Naked…” Peter murmured, tilting her chin up before kissing her again.
Celeste felt a strange shiver at his words–she wasn’t used to Peter making comments like that. A deep blush spread across her face, something he didn’t miss. He smirked slightly.
In the bathroom, Peter couldn’t resist wrapping his arms around Celeste from behind, his hands resting on her belly. At twenty–five, he had never imagined becoming a father. His life had been a complete mess. He had never planned on settling down–not with anyone other than Katherine. But now, standing here, he had to admit that twenty–five was far behind him, and life had turned out pretty damn good.
