“Hello, Signora Catherine. May I see your granddaughter?”
“Yes, of course. Her name is Mary,” Catherine said, motioning toward the room.
Dr. Hill entered and found a small, fragile woman curled up on the massive bed. Despite her professionalism, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity at the sight.
“Could I have a moment alone with her?”
“Of course, but…” Catherine hesitated.
“Don’t worry. If I need anything, I’ll let you know.”
Maximus and Alexia walked into the gynecology clinic together, Alexia radiating pride. She felt on top of the world–soon, she would officially carry the first grandchild of the Palmer family.

“Who are you? Why are you here?” Mary asked softly.
“As I said, I’m Serena Hill. Your family is worried about you, so they thought it might help if you talked to someone outside the family. Would you like to share what’s troubling you?”
“There’s not much to say. I fell for it again. It always happens, but I’ll get over it,” Mary said, brushing her tears away.
“What do you mean by ‘fall for it‘? Have you ever thought that maybe you need help to truly heal? Sometimes falls leave wounds that need to be healed at their root. Have you done that?”
Mary looked at her, confused.
“I can help you, Mary. But I need you to want that help–for yourself, and no one else.”
“How could you possibly help me?”
“I’d like to get to know you better. Together, we can figure out where the healing needs to begin. I won’t lie and say you’ll feel better tomorrow, but I promise there will come a day when this pain is just a memory–one that fades as quickly as it comes.”
Dr. Hill sat down beside Mary. Moved by something inexplicable, Mary embraced her. Serena saw the pain in her eyes–a deep, lingering sorrow from years of heartbreak.
