Emily was speechless. “Where does a kid like him come up with lines like that?” she wondered.
Seeing that she couldn’t get her suitcase back, she decided to let him have his way. They walked out of the airport together.
“Where are you staying?” she asked.
“The WX Hotel.”
Emily froze. The WX Hotel was the same one booked for her by the Bay City government contact. She had planned to use the opportunity to part ways with Sean, but it seemed they would still be stuck traveling together.
The two ended up sharing a cab to the hotel.
Once in her room, Emily unpacked her things and started organizing her belongings.
*Ding dong.* The doorbell rang repeatedly.
She walked to the door and opened it. “Who is it?”
“Emily, is your phone dead or something?” Sean leaned casually against the doorframe, looking exasperated. “My phone?” Emily grabbed it from her bag. “Oh, I forgot to turn off airplane mode. Why? What’s the matter?” Sean pointed to his watch. “It’s dinnertime. Work is important, but you still need to eat.”
Emily glanced at the time, realizing it was indeed late. She instinctively wanted to refuse.
“Come on, Emily, there’s no need to be so distant. Can’t we at least have one meal together?” Sean put on an exaggeratedly hurt expression. “I promised Helen I’d take care of you!” Seeing that Emily wasn’t budging, Sean reluctantly played his trump card, Helen.
Emily didn’t believe it. “Sure, Helen might’ve given him my flight and seat number, but handing me over to him? No way!” she thought.
The next moment, her doubts were shattered.
Sean called Helen on video, and her perfectly made–up, radiant face filled the screen.
“Hey, girl! How’s the trip? Getting along with Sean?” Helen asked with a cheerful grin, completely oblivious to the storm brewing on Emily’s face.
Emily snatched Sean’s phone, storming back into her room. Through gritted teeth, she asked, “Helen, did you seriously ask Sean to take care of me?”
Helen nodded enthusiastically, her carefree smile intact. “Of course! I didn’t want you to feel lonely, so I sent you a little puppy for company. Might as well take advantage of it!”
“Helen, you know me. I’m not looking for-”
“I know, I know, you’re not interested in relationships right now. But how will you move on from the past without something new to distract you? Think of it as a little hormonal boost!”
With a mischievous grin, Helen hung up before Emily could protest further.
Back at the door, Sean couldn’t hear the conversation but noticed the silence. He casually walked in, one hand in his pocket, and retrieved his phone.

His pitiful expression made Emily feel like a heartless villain.
“Who’s backing out? I was just thinking of waiting until after the trip and taking Helen along,” she retorted, glaring at him.
“Of course, you always have the best memory,” Sean replied with a sly grin, choosing not to argue further. Emily grabbed her bag, shut her door, and left the hotel with him. She wasn’t sure where Sean had managed to get a car, but soon enough, she found herself in the passenger seat.
“What do you feel like eating? Chinese, Thai, or maybe something grilled?” Sean asked as he drove.
“Let’s do hot pot. Spicy and tomato broth combo,” Emily replied without hesitation.
If she was treating, she might as well get what she wanted. She had been craving something warm and flavorful with the AC blasting.
