Chapter 97
Emma hadn’t been intimate with Justin yet, and this was the one subject she absolutely couldn’t stand being brought up, especially not by Emily.
Emily and Justin’s first time had been awkward. He was inexperienced, almost like a fumbling teenager, and his skills were lacking. But with time, he had grown more experienced and skilled.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Emily’s eyes turned cold as she faced Emma. “If you’re so fond of used men, Miss Xander, you can have him.”
With that, the elevator doors slid open. Emily stepped inside without sparing Emma another glance.
As the doors closed, Emma’s face twisted in barely concealed fury.
Inside the elevator, Emily cast her gaze downward, pressing the button for her floor with disinterest. Emma wasn’t worth her attention.
When the elevator reached the ground floor, the doors opened to reveal Sean waiting outside.
“Why are you here?” Emily asked, surprised.
Sean looked mildly aggrieved. “I knew you’d try to sneak out without telling me, so I waited at the main entrance.”
He gave her a quick once–over, his gaze sweeping for any signs of distress. Seeing nothing alarming, he visibly relaxed.
Emily avoided his eyes, feeling a touch guilty. He wasn’t wrong. She had indeed planned to leave quietly.
“Are you heading home now? Let me give you a ride,” Sean offered.
Emily didn’t hesitate. Since Justin clearly wasn’t going to arrange a ride for her anytime soon, and calling a car service on the mountain wasn’t exactly convenient, she accepted the lift.
As the elevator doors closed, Emma returned to Justin’s side.
The investigation revealed that the person responsible for spiking the drink was a hotel staff. Someone had instructed him to lace a wine glass with poison and place it in a specific spot. Cash was found in the staff’s temporary locker, and the pesticide was discovered in a trash can.
However, the mastermind behind the scheme remained unknown.
“Justin, you shouldn’t stress too much. Whoever orchestrated this is obviously too scared to confront you openly,” Emma said, slipping her arm through his in a gesture of comfort.
“You should be careful, too,” Justin replied gravely.
Justin’s father had died in a car accident, Emma had disappeared three years ago, and now his mother was the victim of a suspicious incident. While each seemed like a coincidence, together, they felt targeted, as though someone was deliberately aiming at the Yates family.
“Don’t worry, I will,” Emma promised with a sweet nod.
“Oh, by the way, who was that Mr. Wilfred earlier?” Emma tilted her head, her curiosity apparent.
“A major oil tycoon from Merika State,” Justin replied casually as they descended the stairs to resume hosting the
event.
“What brings him to Lincourt City?” Emma pressed further

“RC Corporation is collaborating with him on a project,” he answered, offering no further details.
Emma’s eyes gleamed with intrigue as she mentally strategized. If she could involve herself in this project, her position at RC Corporation would skyrocket.
On the way to the parking lot, Sean noticed that Emily seemed downcast, as if she had been wronged.
What had Justin done to her back in that room? Was it related to Heidi? Sean had seen medical personnel nearby
the elevators.
“Emily, you didn’t eat much at the banquet. Let me make it up to you with dinner,” Sean offered, attempting to lift her spirits.
“There’s no need. Just drop me off at the boutique where my car is parked,” Emily replied, her voice weary.
As she spoke, her purse buzzed with an incoming call. Glancing at the screen, she saw Justin’s name and immediately pressed decline with a heavy sigh.
“You’re not answering?” Sean asked, curious.
“No,” she replied curtly, picking up her pace.
Sean couldn’t hide his grin. He liked the idea of her ignoring Justin.
They reached the parking lot, where Sean’s car happened to be parked next to Wilfred’s. Wilfred and his assistant seemed to be inspecting something near their vehicle.
When Wilfred turned and spotted Emily, a warm smile spread across his face.
“Miss Yates,” he greeted politely.
