“You’re asking for it,” Ellie said, standing her ground. Haley’s sharp nails scratched Ellie’s neck, and Ellie forcefully pushed Haley away.
Suddenly, the sound of something hitting the water hard. Ellie turned over, only to see waves on the river’s surface. Her mind went blank with shock. She only meant to free herself and gave a slight shove, so how did she end up pushing Haley into the water?
“Someone fell in the river. Get help quick,” a passerby shouted.

Another one chimed in, “Hurry, take that path down. There’s a life ring on the tree.”
Hearing the chaotic footsteps and shouts around her, Ellie snapped back to reality and was about to call for help. Just then, a figure rushed past her and jumped into the river.
Ellie stood by the river, watching Alex swim frantically towards Haley. She opened her mouth but found herself unable to say anything.
Soon, Haley was saved. Ellie observed from a distance as Alex held Haley close and whispered softly. Quietly, she grabbed her suitcase and walked away.
“Ellie!” Alex’s angry voice roared from behind her. She didn’t stop. But soon, a sharp pain shot through her shoulder as he grabbed her from behind and pulled her back.
Soaked to the skin, Alex pointed at Haley a short distance away and shouted, “Why did you push her into the river? Were you trying to kill her?”
Ellie met Alex’s enraged eyes and firmly said, “She brought it on herself.”
Haley stumbled over, standing between Alex and Ellie. “Alex, that’s not true. I stopped on the bridge to make a call when I saw Ellie below. I thought I’d see her off to the airport. But she got angry, slapped me, and pushed me into the river.”
Haley reached out to grab Ellie’s hand. “Ellie, I really don’t get why you’re treating me this way. Even if it was my fault for breaking up with Aaron, I already said sorry. We’ve been friends for so many years. How could you push me into the river?”
“Haley, you’re so disgusting,” Ellie snapped, forcefully pushing Haley away.
“Ellie!” Alex exclaimed. Seeing Ellie daringly push Haley in front of him, he grabbed Ellie’s arm and flung her aside.
Ellie’s body lost its balance and she fell to the ground. Her emerald bracelet hit a stone and broke into several pieces. The momentum carried her, and she quickly rolled toward the riverbank, ending up in the water as gasps echoed around her.
“Ellie!” Alex stared in shock, his heart nearly stopping. Just as he was about to let go of Haley to rescue Ellie, Haley collapsed, grabbing his arm tightly.
“Are you okay?” Alex caught Haley and carried her to a nearby bench.
Suddenly, Haley hugged his waist tightly. “I’m so cold and scared and my head hurts.”
Alex picked Haley up, his eyes a fiery red as they stayed fixed on Ellie, who was struggling desperately in the river. “I’ll take you to the car and turn on the heater,” he said, and with that, he left with Haley, without looking back.

bother to know if I’m alive, Ellie thought, wiping away her tears. She ignored her own messy state to search for the broken bracelet.
When Alex came back using the overpass, he saw Ellie from a distance. She was drenched and kneeling on the ground picking up the broken emerald bracelet pieces. Without a word, he pulled her to her feet, causing the small bits she had picked up to fall apart.

“Let go.” Ellie shivered violently from the biting cold in the air. Her face was pale, her clothes dripping water, but she pulled away from Alex and squatted down again to collect the pieces of emerald.
Alex kicked aside the broken emerald in front of Ellie and lifted her up again, his eyes red as he warned her, “Your worthless life is nothing compared to Haley’s. I don’t want there to be a next time.”
