Coming out of the employee exit, she spotted Alex at a distance, talking on the phone with a lunch box in his hand. Quickly, she turned and headed towards another exit.
Alex turned around just in time to see Ellie walking away in the opposite direction. He hung up the phone and hurried to catch up.
It had been nearly three months since their last meeting. Standing by the emergency lane of the hospital, they silently looked at each other.
Alex waited for what felt like forever, but Ellie didn’t say a word. Irritated, he said, “Cat got your tongue, huh? Can’t even say hi when you see me?”
Ellie pressed her lips together and didn’t speak. Alex was always like this; no matter how serious things got between them, the next time they met, he acted as if nothing had happened.

Ellie looked at the lunchbox Alex handed her, recognizing it was from the Warren Manor. She reached out to take it. “Thank you,” she said.
Just when Ellie’s fingers touched the handle of the lunchbox, Alex pulled back, not giving it to her. As she looked up at him, he asked, “Who was the guy you were with?”

Seeing that Ellie was unwilling to explain, Alex got angry, his tone getting harsher. “You dare to date but can’t admit it, huh?”
Ellie tugged at the corners of her lips but still didn’t speak. None of this concerned him, and she had nothing to hide. Besides, she was an adult now, so having a boyfriend wouldn’t be a big deal.
With Ellie’s continued silence, Alex pulled her towards the street “Take me to where you’re staying.”
The strength difference between them was clear, and although Ellie was sweating from trying to get away, Alex pulled her to the side of the road. She looked down at the hand gripping her wrist and opened her mouth.
Alex joked, “Got itchy teeth again? Want to bite me?”
“My wrist hurts,” Ellie finally said. As Alex let go, she turned and walked away.
Alex, annoyed by Ellie’s cool attitude, stopped her under the streetlamp and asked, “Why did you block me?”
Ellie pretended not to hear him, keeping her head down. She had blocked him for months, and he only just noticed.
Ellie’s indifferent made Alex so angry that it made his sides hurt He pointed at her forehead and said, “If you keep ignoring me, believe it or not, I’ll hit you?”

When Alex was about to lose control, Ellie looked up at him with clear, calm eyes, “I believe you. But my worthless life isn’t worth your effort.”
They locked eyes, and Alex was almost choked by Ellie’s words. His chest was heaving, and he was barely keeping himself under control. He stared at her and said, “Try talking to me with that attitude again.”
Ellie shrugged it off. “That’s just the way I am, and I can’t change that. If you want sweet talk, go find Haley.”
At the mention of Haley, Alex’s face turned a bit dark. After a few deep breaths, he spoke again, sounding a bit calmer, “Don’t be ungrateful. I’m doing this for your own good. Do you even know what that guy was really like before you started seeing him?
“How old is he? What does he do for a living? How many people are in his family, any hereditary illnesses? How much property does he own? How many houses or cars? Has his family met you? Do they agree with your relationship?
“How long have you guys known each other, and how far have things gone? This is Ameria. What if you get scammed or
even worse?
Facing Alex’s constant questioning, Ellie gave a slight smirk. “If I end up being sold, then so be it. It’s not like this worthless life of mine is worth much anyway.”
Alex clutched his heart. They looked into each other’s eyes as he took a deep breath. After a long pause, he finally spoke softly, “Ellic, please just listen to me. I’m only trying to look out for you.”
Seeing Ellie stand indifferently before him, he reached out to hold her hand. “Is there any good food around here? Let me take you out for a bite.”
Ellie stepped back, avoiding Alex’s hand. “It’s not safe here at night. If there’s nothing else, you should head back.”
Alex rushed over right after getting off the plane and waited so long for her outside the hospital. He didn’t expect to be told to leave after barely speaking a few words. His face darkened, and he lost his cool, shouting, “Ellie, what the hell do you want?”
Ellie replied, “Nothing. What’s up with you?”
“What’s up with me?” Alex almost growled each word through gritted teeth.
