Seeing Alex about to leave, Haley tearfully held him back. “Alex,m sorry. I didn’t expect things to turn out like this. I’m really being wronged. Why do they all protect Ellic and refuse to listen to my explanation?”
Alex said, “The past is past; no need to explain.”
Who was right or wrong no longer mattered.
Haley tentatively asked with a guilty conscience, “Alex, will you break up with me?”
“No.” Alex pushed Haley away, “Rest well and don’t think too much.”
As soon as Alex arrived at Layton’s hotel, he was pulled into a private room by Layton. “Watch the news!”
Alex stared at the screen and saw his parents clarifying to all the reporters that his engagement to Haley was a rumor and that his fiancée was Diana Grant. He picked up the remote control and turned off the TV.
Layton said, “Lacey has never been wronged since childhood. She was framed by Haley and saw Ellie harmed by Haley, so she was mad and even wanted to settle accounts with Haley’s parents last night. I barely managed to stop her.”
Seeing Alex frown and remain silent, Layton tentatively asked in a low voice, “Now Haley is on the blacklist with your parents. What are you going to do?”
Alex said, “Let’s put that aside for now. Help me with something first.”

On the night of Ameria, at midnight, Ellie still had bandages on her head and face, revealing only her eyes, nose, and mouth.
Her frail body stood alone on the balcony, like an injured kitten abandoned by someone. Just her silhouette was heart- wrenching to see.
Ellie slightly raised her head, looking at the myriad stars in the sky, feeling a sourness in her nose.
She missed home terribly. She wanted to call her mom. She tried several times, but each time she picked up the phone and before she could dial the number, she started crying.
Hearing a knock on the hospital room door, Ellie turned and came out from the balcony. She thought it was a nurse coming to check on her and take her temperature, but it was Lacey.
“Ellie!” Lacey saw Ellie and, with a heartache, stepped forward to hug her. Hearing Ellie’s muffled groan, Lacey quickly let go
in alarm.
Lacey lifted Ellie’s sleeve and saw the large bruises on Ellie’s arm her eyes welling up with tears. “Haley is damned. When I get back, I won’t let her off the hook!”
“How did you come all this way?” Ellie lowered her sleeve and led Lacey into the hospital room.
Lacey stared at Ellie’s face wrapped in bandages. “Ellie, how is your face really?”

Ellie patted Lacey’s hand to comfort her. “Did you forget that Ir a plastic and reconstructive surgeon? These are just superficial injuries. They won’t leave scars if I take care of them properly after the bandages come off.”

Ellie spoke lightly, but Lacey knew that even if those ugly scars could heal, it would take a long time, not to mention they
were on the face.
Lacey said, “Ellie, why don’t you take a leave and go back to your country? Your facial injuries won’t heal in a short time. Are you going to work with these scars?”
Ellie shook her head. “It’s okay, my colleagues are all very kind and won’t laugh at me.”
If she didn’t work for a month, it meant Aaron would have to forgo eating and drinking and use his entire month’s salary just to buy a month’s worth of medicine for their father and cover their parents‘ most basic living expenses.
Ellie couldn’t afford to be capricious or lie down to rest. In the hospital these past few days, she had become so anxious that she started to lose sleep.
“Since you’re not going back, I’ll stay here with you. I’ll leave when you’re better,” Lacey carefully helped Ellie sit on the edge of the hospital bed. “You should lie down, eat well, and sleep well”
Lacey added, “Mrs. Warren is busy today, but she will probably come the day after tomorrow. I’ll take care of you together with Mrs. Warren.”
Ellie lay quietly on the hospital bed, listening to Lacey chatter beside her bed, tears silently rolling down her temples.
She felt that being cared for was truly wonderful.
