Ellie looked at Aaron with concern.
“Don’t worry,” Aaron reassured her, pulling Ellie back,
Alex got out of the car and walked straight up to Aaron. The two men locked eyes, while Alex’s peripheral vision fell on Ellie’s tightly covered face. He felt an inexplicable sense of oppression in his chest.
Seeing that Ellie hadn’t looked over, Alex subtly shifted his gaze back to Aaron,
“Aaron, I’m giving you two options: either delete those videos and photos, or keep them hidden forever!” Alex’s face darkened as he slowly warned. “If you dare to release a single photo that hurts Haley, I will make sure you lose everything you have!”
Aaron looked careless. “Whatever you say; I won’t take either of those paths”
Pausing for a moment, Aaron continued, “As long as you or your fiancée dare to harm Ellie again, I will not hesitate to let these things serve their purpose to the fullest. I believe in the fairness and justice of the law!”
“Aaron, don’t think that just because you’re wearing that uniform, you can uphold justice!” A heavy sarcasm escaped Alex’s nasal tone. His contemptuous gaze swept up and down Aaron’s prosecutor uniform.
“Fairness and justice mean nothing in the face of capital. If you don’t understand, look into the insider story of the prosecutor who committed suicide before you took over,” Alex added.
Aaron remained unmoved. “You can’t intimidate me!”
Alex said angrily, “Then let’s see about that!”
Ellie listened to their conversation, feeling more and more anxious.
Though she didn’t understand the intricacies of law and politics, she was well aware of how difficult it was for ordinary people to stand up against capital and power.
What was shown on TV was just the tip of the iceberg; the darkness in real life was even more unbearable.
If Aaron really continued to confront Alex for her sake, she dared not imagine the consequences.
“Aaron, let’s go,” Ellie said, pulling Aaron to leave, bypassing Alex’s car.
Alex turned to watch Ellie’s retreating figure as she walked faster and faster. Layton had told him that Ellie’s face had healed, so he didn’t understand why she was still wearing a mask.
Alex stared intently at the direction Ellie had left, his gaze complex and unyielding, until her figure completely vanished from his sight. Only then did he get into his car with an air of irritation.
Next to the trash can, an elderly woman scavenging through the garbage pulled out a white men’s shirt. “Such a nice fabric, ruined like this. Too bad that it can’t be mended…”
Sitting in his luxury car, Alex lit a cigarette. Watching the scavenging old lady clutching a tattered piece of clothing as if loath to part with it, he frowned in disgust.
At that moment, Alex’s phone rang. Seeing that it was Haley, he answered the call, “Stop crying. Just wait for me where you are. I’ll be right there.”

Chapter 138
After hanging up, he noticed the scavenging old lady and her rickshaw blocking the intersection. Alex honked his car horn.
The elderly woman was not very agile. Hearing the horn, she hastily dropped the white shirt she was holding and went to push her rickshaw.
Once the intersection was cleared, Alex’s Rolls–Royce Silver Ghost sped away from the intersection. The wheels rolled over the white shirt, stirring up a cloud of dust.
