She wrapped her arms around Alex’s neck and stood on tiptoe, her intention to kiss him obvious. “Alex, I really feel so insecure. Let’s get married.”

Alex pushed Haley away and raised the collar chain in his hand. He stared at Haley, confirming with her again. “Tell me the truth. Is this collar chain yours?”
Haley’s heart skipped a beat. She suddenly pushed Alex away, turned around, and guiltily avoided Alex’s piercing gaze.
But she reacted quickly. With her back to Alex, she spoke in a forceful tone, “This collar chain is something I’ve kept private for many years. If it’s not mine, then whose could it be? Why are you asking this?”
Alex stared at Haley’s back, his eyes somewhat moved. “Then can you tell me the origin of this collar chain?
Haley’s eyes wavered, her heart pounding.
She had stolen the collar chain from Ellie a long time ago. She couldn’t tell him the truth.
Clutching her hands tightly in front of her, Haley tentatively said, “My mom said that when I was a child, she took me to the countryside to play, and then I got very sick, causing me to forget many things.”
“But I remember that I once saved someone, and this collar chain was given to me by that person,” she continued.
Alex turned Haley’s shoulders to face him.
When he spoke again, Alex had already softened his voice. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve forgotten. I’ll tell you again. The person you risked your life to save was me; this collar chain was given to you by me.”
Haley’s eyes widened in disbelief.
On a whim, she had worn the collar chain a few times when Ellie was not at Jaslands. Perhaps Alex had seen her wearing it and mistakenly thought she was the one who saved him.
“I owe my life to you. How could I not want you?” Alex stepped forward and personally placed the collar chain around Haley’s neck. “Don’t think too much. No matter what happens, I will always stand by your side.”
“You rest first. I’m going out to make a phone call.” Alex left the bedroom. Haley collapsed weakly onto a chair.
Now she understood everything. Alex was very protective. He had protected Ellie for more than a decade, yet every time she clashed with Ellie, he would unhesitatingly stand by her side.
It turned out that the reason Alex had become engaged to her and was so unconditionally biased towards her was because he had mistaken her for his savior.
After a moment of confusion, Haley hastily removed the collar chain from her neck and clenched it in her palm. She couldn’t leave the collar chain here. She had to take it back to the Owens residence and lock it in her safe room.
She absolutely could not let Alex know that the collar chain belonged to Ellie.
A few minutes later, when Haley saw Alex return, she cautiously approached him. “Alex, can you promise me not to mention this collar chain to anyone?”
