Alex’s bloodshot eyes stared intently at Ellie, speaking to Nancy word for word. “Mom, listen carefully. If you insist on adopting her as your daughter, I’ll enlist in the military.
“You good–for–nothing,” Nancy nearly fainted upon hearing Alex’s words.
But Alex showed no signs of backing down. “If you dare to do this, I’ll die out there like my brother, and you won’t even be able to find my remains.”
Before Alex finished his sentence, Nancy slapped him hard across the face.
But Alex remained resolute. “I mean what I say.
Ignoring Nancy’s ashen face, Alex fixed his gaze on Ellie. “Ellie, listen to me carefully. Even if my parents and my grandfather protect you, you must come forward to clear Haley’s name. I’m not discussing this with you; I’m warning you.”
With that, Alex slammed the door and left.
After Alex left, Ellie helped Nancy sit by the bedside.
Ellie knew Alex had an older brother named Orion. Almost all the clothes Aaron wore when he was young were hand–me- downs from Orion. Later, Orion joined the military, and then it was said that he died in the line of duty.
Orion was a taboo subject for everyone in the Warren family. No one dared to mention his name. Ellie didn’t know the specifics.
She didn’t expect that Alex, in order to force her to clear Haley’s name, would say such heartless words in front of his own mother.
In the morning, Alex went to the VIP gym at the Earl Hotel.
Layton was clearly surprised to see Alex. “The incident with Haley has escalated so quickly online, and the Owens family’s stock has started to plummet. How can you still be in the mood to work out?”
Alex, dressed in a pure black training suit, was doing pull–ups, with sweat beads rolling down his forehead and soaking his chest and back. He continued for another two to three hundred before stopping.
The two went to the rest area, where Layton handed Alex a bottle of water. “You’ve been suppressing the police results from being announced; that’s not fair to Ellie.”
Alex, with his elbows on his knees and head down, gasped for breath. “She doesn’t need fairness; she just needs to listen to

Layton looked at Alex with a complicated expression. “Haley framed Ellie by self–sabotaging, and you’re forcing Ellie to clear Haley’s name. What are you really thinking?”
Alex remained silent.
Layton waited for a long time, but seeing that Alex was unwilling to speak, he frowned in frustration. “You also said that you didn’t dislike Haley.”

Layton paused and lowered his voice. “You know Ellie has secretly liked you for so many years, and you still treat her this way. How can you bear to do this?”
“I’m just asking her to clarify things for Haley and endure a little injustice; it’s not a big deal.” Alex irritably twisted open the mineral water bottle and gulped it down.
Layton was about to speak when his phone rang. After answering a call from Lacey, Layton looked at Alex. “Is your phone turned off?”
Alex frowned.
Layton said, “Haley’s had an accident.”
