Seeing Alex about to leave, Haley recklessly stopped him, lifted her hair, and pulled down her collar to show Alex the collar chain on her neck. “Alex, I know I was wrong. You promised to protect me for life, so you won’t abandon me, right?”

Alex stared intently at the collar chain on Haley’s neck with a complicated look in his eyes.

Haley said, “For the sake of how I once risked my life to save you, will you help me one more time?”

Seeing Alex’s silence, Haley hurriedly swore, “After this matter is over, I promise I won’t cause any more trouble for Ellie. I swear.”

“Get some rest. I’ll handle this matter.” Alex left.

Watching Alex turn around and leave the ward neatly, Haley collapsed weakly by the bedside.

It turned out Alex knew everything.

Clutching the pendant of her collar chain tightly, Haley couldn’t stop trembling. She dared not imagine what Alex would do to her if he found out the collar chain belonged to Ellie.

A few minutes later, Alex and Layton were waiting for the elevator at the hospital elevator lobby together.

Sensing that Alex was clearly not in the right mood, Layton’s shrewd eyes swept over Alex. “Since you know what Haley has been doing behind your back, you’re still protecting her like this, which is not fair to Ellie.”

Alex laughed. “Fairness is only for the strong. Besides, I’m not going to let her suffer in vain.”

The elevator doors opened, and Alex stepped into the elevator first.

The elevator stopped at the floor where Ellie’s ward was located. Alex got out of the elevator and went straight to Ellie’s

room.

“Mark, I have something to attend to right now, let’s catch up some other day,” Ellie, leaning against the hospital bed, spoke hastily and ended the call as soon as Alex entered.

Alex approached the bedside, and Ellie instinctively moved to the other side of the bed. Neither of them spoke, and the atmosphere in the ward was inexplicably oppressive.

“How’s your wrist?” After a long silence, Alex finally spoke.

Ellie lowered her eyes, curled her legs against the headrest of the bed, and remained silent, making no movements. The bed sank slightly beside her as Alex sat down next to her, prompting Ellie to scoot further away again.

Seeing Ellie constantly moving away from him on the bed as if avoiding a plague, Alex’s brows furrowed so tightly they could pinch a fly.

He tentatively reached for Ellie’s injured wrist, but as soon as his fingertips touched her, she reflexively pulled away. Alex hesitated and withdrew his hand, not continuing the action.

After a long pause, Alex handed his secondary card to Ellie. “The PIN is my birthday; you can use it as you wish.”

Ellie glanced indifferently at the card Alex offered and put her hands under the blanket. There was no such thing as a free lunch; he wouldn’t give her the card without reason.

Seeing Ellie not take the card and remain silent, sitting quietly in front of him, Alex knew she was no longer the obedient little girl from before.

His Adam’s apple rolled involuntarily, and his complicated gaze lingered on Ellie’s face.

He stared at her intently for a long while, then said, “Ellie, if you obediently go and help Haley clarify this matter, I’ll accept any conditions you set.”

Ellie looked up, meeting Alex’s gaze. She asked softly, “Set conditions? Do I deserve to?”

This sentence brought their conversation to an abrupt end.

Alex stood up abruptly. “Ellie, are you trying to drive her to her death?”

Facing Alex’s irritation, Ellie spoke in a nonchalant tone. “I’m not driving her to anything; she was the one who instructed my colleague to leak that information to the media. She’s the one seeking her own demise.”
