After Alex left, Ellie felt a lingering unease in her heart.

Aaron put down his umbrella and turned to see Ellie’s worried gaze on him.

Seeing Ellie’s low spirits, Aaron changed the subject. “Cheer up. Thanksgiving is coming up soon, and I can take a break to pick up Mom and Dad and spend some quality time with them.”
Ellie looked down at the candy Aaron handed her, her eyes blurred with tears. “Aaron, I’ll go to him.”
The emotional walls she had so painstakingly built collapsed at that moment. Her ridiculous persistence and her laughable pride were so fragile in the face of reality.
Aaron’s expression stiffened, and then he sat down beside Ellie’s bed with heartache. “Listen to me; don’t go to him.”
No matter how heavy the rain, it would eventually stop; no matter how painful the wound, it would eventually scab over. No matter how difficult the situation, it could be endured.
Ellie choked back her words.
Ellie had contemplated what it meant to be strong. She thought that perhaps strength was like what Aaron was doing now, comforting her with a smile despite his own immense grievances, telling her to cheer up.
