“You little brat, Todd said, sinking into the couch in frustration.
“Calm down, sir,” the butler said, seeing the old man’s increasing ire and quickly pulling out a heart pill just in case.
Aaron, a pillar of strength, had tears in his eyes. “Ellie has always been a good kid. No one would willingly endure the pain of separation to hand their daughter over to someone else. The only reason she agreed to join the Warren family is because I, as her brother, have failed to protect her.
“My dad lost his leg saving my sister from that disaster. You have no idea how much it hurts her to hear you insult him. You said he sold a daughter in his past life, causing him to suffer now with one leg lame.
“She almost fainted at the hospital. Regardless of whether she wants to acknowledge Nancy as her mother, she never considered stepping into your life. Please don’t disturb hers anymore.”
As Aaron was leaving, he made sure to say farewell to the older members of the Warren family.
“You little punk!” Carlos managed to rise slowly using his cane after Aaron left.
Shaking with emotion, he pointed a trembling finger at Alex. “Go apologize. Get down on your knees and apologize to your Mr. Thompson!”
Alex’s eyes flashed red, emotions boiling beneath the surface. “Kneel for him? He doesn’t deserve it!”
“You little…” Carlos scolded.
“Are you all right, sir?” shouted the butler.
“Dad!” shouted Todd.
Suddenly, Carlos collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital.
It was Thanksgiving night in the Jaslands Hospital’s intensive care unit. Layton rushed over after hearing the news. After checking on Carlos, Layton stepped out of the room, closely followed by Alex.
As they reached the corner of the hallway, Layton opened a window for some fresh air, remarking, “So here we are, spending Thanksgiving in the hospital together with the Owens, Warren, and Thompson families.”
Alex shot Layton a sharp glare.
Pulling Alex into the elevator, Layton continued, “I saw your parents heading over to apologize to Ellie’s folks when I arrived. What do you say we go check it out?”
The elevator stopped at the floor where Ellie’s father was. Layton tugged at Alex, leading him toward Ellie’s room. “You’re the reason she’s in the hospital. At least go pay a visit. It’s not shameful to show some respect to your elders.”
Alex stared at the door of the room not far away and shook off Layton’s grip. “I’m not going.”
He leaned against the wall in the hallway, refusing to enter the room or walk away. A cigarette dangled from his fingers, unlit, as his gaze flickered back and forth toward the door of the hospital room.

I don’t get it. Why would you run over to Ellie’s on a holiday?” Layton said, noticing how tense Alex looked.
Alex parted his lips but didn’t speak.
Layton pressed on. “It’s one thing to have your issues with Ellie, but why drag her parents into this?”
Alex pulled at his collar, clearly irritated, and took a deep breath. “I wasn’t looking for a fight. She just wasn’t very nice to me first
Layton rolled his eyes. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking. You have a girlfriend but are still thinking about Ellie, right You’re just afraid that if you two become like siblings for real, you won’t be able to do anything to her anymore.”
Before Alex could respond, Layton’s elbow nudged him.
Following Layton’s gaze, Alex saw Ellie coming their way, a receipt in hand.
Layton stepped forward to greet her, and Ellie replied in a hoarse voice.
Layton chose his words carefully. “Next time someone picks on you, just give it right back. No need to cry like that; it’s tough to watch
I got bitten by a dog and couldn’t bite back, which is why I ended up crying,” Ellie replied, turning on her heel and leaving without so much as a glance at Alex.
Layton turned to Alex, speechless.
