Watching Aaron drive Diana’s car slowly onto the main road, Ellie picked up her phone to call a ride.
Across the street, Alex was getting out of Layton’s car.
Late at night, when Ellie saw Alex crossing the street toward her, she turned around and walked away.
“Do you have to leave as soon as you see me? Am I some kind of monster?” Alex kept a calm face as he gently grabbed Ellie’s wrist, being careful not to use too much force.
Ellie stopped and turned around.
Meeting Alex’s eyes, Ellie remembered how concerned Alex looked when he was holding Haley earlier in the day. She pulled her hand back forcefully and took out a wet wipe from her bag to clean it.
Alex lost his words for a while. Holding back his emotions, Alex said, “I’ll call a car and go back with you.”
“I’m not ready to head back yet; you go on ahead.” Ellie, seeing Alex about to catch a ride home with her, suddenly didn’t feel like going.
“I want to walk around a bit more.” Ellie said, turning around to walk back toward the shopping street.
Alex watched Ellie’s silhouette as she walked away and quietly followed her, saying, “Let me walk with you.”
Ellie neither agreed nor refused.
Alex didn’t say anything else, and the two of them walked one behind the other towards the downtown square.
The night got late, and people in the square started to scatter.
Ellie sat in the spot where she had just been talking with Aaron, staring blankly into the distance.
Seeing that Ellie was ignoring him, Alex quietly sat down next to her, his eyes intensely focused on her.
Ellie’s facial features were innocent, yet her lips were so captivating, giving her face a mix of purity and allure.
She sat quietly next to him, the night breeze lifting her long hair, her beauty capturing attention and making it hard to look
away.
Seeing Ellie shiver from the wind, Alex took off his jacket and put it around her shoulders.
“No thanks.” Ellie pushed Alex away.
Alex frowned and put his jacket back on Ellie, and she pushed it away again.
“Don’t move!” Alex warned, firmly putting the jacket back on Ellie and wrapping his arm over her shoulders to stop her from shrugging it off.
Ellie looked up into Alex’s determined eyes, opened her mouth, but didn’t resist anymore.
Alex subtly loosened his grip, feeling that Ellie had calmed down.

left.
Spotting Alex beside her, Ellie couldn’t help but frown. It was the first time she had seen him so quiet.
He was so silent it almost seemed like they would sit there forever.
“No matter what you do to my brother, he won’t give in!” Pulling herself back to reality, Ellie suddenly said. “My brother is ready to lose his job!”
Their eyes met, and Alex stayed silent. After a long pause, he finally said, “Am I really that bad in your eyes?”
Ellie turned her gaze back and corrected him, “The situation is even worse. I’m sitting here talking to you calmly is just out of respect for the elders, because I’m helpless, and because I owe your family more than I can pay back.”
Alex stared intensely into Ellie’s eyes, a dangerous look in his gaze. His Adam’s apple moved up and down intensely, his chest rising and falling noticeably, his eyes red as he stopped short of speaking.
