Ellie’s eyes briefly met Alex’s, but she quickly turned her gaze away, her expression neutral.
No matter how bad a man was, once he fell in love with a woman, he would unknowingly change for her, whether for the better or worse.
To be with Haley, Alex had lowered his pride and pursued her. Now that Haley was the one initiating the breakup, he refused her so firmly, his face contorted with pain.
Alex, so proud and high–strung, had truly shattered his own pride for Haley.
Though Ellie felt a pang of sympathy, she was glad to see her own heart as calm as still water.
When Haley saw Nancy approach with a dark expression, she forced herself to speak. “Mrs. Warren, please have a seat.”
Nancy turned her head, casting Alex a scathing glare before she addressed Haley, her voice cold. “Stop putting on an act in front of me. I know you wish nothing more than for me to drop dead.”
“Mrs. Warren, I don’t,” Haley responded, lowering her head, guilt washing over her.
Nancy’s tone shifted, laced with disdain. “Haley, back then, I didn’t know what kind of person you were. I genuinely hoped things would work out between you and Alex. But what do I find out now?
“You’ve been secretly dating Aaron for three years, and on top of that, you got together with Alex while still in a relationship with Aaron.”
“No, Mrs. Warren, by the time I started seeing Alex, I had already broken up with Aaron,” Haley quickly explained, glancing at Ellie, her eyes filled with bitterness.
Nancy couldn’t hide her disgust, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “I don’t have time for your past messes. What I can’t tolerate is how you treated Ellie. What you did to her in Ameria? Because of that, you’ll never marry Alex, not in this lifetime.”
Haley looked at Alex, hoping for some support, but Alex’s gaze remained fixed on Ellie, his expression distant and lost in thought.
Haley’s face flushed with embarrassment, her voice rising in desperation. “Mrs. Warren, you can’t treat me like this! Alex knows everything. He forgave me. So why do you keep bringing up this one thing?”
“As long as I’m alive, I run this house,” Nancy responded firmly.
She wasn’t willing to waste another moment on Haley. “Didn’t you say you were breaking up with Alex? You broke things off with Aaron before, and now you want to break up with Alex? Just turn around and leave. I promise Alex won’t bother you anymore.”
Haley opened her mouth, but Nancy’s words cut her off, leaving her speechless.
Upon seeing Alex’s indifference, Haley’s eyes welled up, and without saying another word, she stormed out of the room, walking as quickly as she could.
The moment Haley left, Nancy spun around and slapped Alex across the face.
Slap! The sharp sound of the slap echoed throughout the room, bouncing off the walls.

Alex reached up to touch his check, about to say something, but when he saw Ellie’s detached expression, he bit down on his words and remained silent.
Nancy jabbed a finger at Alex’s forehead, seething with anger. “I really don’t understand how you can be my son.”
She continued, her voice bitter. “There are so many good girls you could’ve chosen, and yet you pick Haley, that bitch. Should I get you a new pair of eyes so you can see clearly?”
“Say something!” Nancy demanded when Alex still didn’t speak, and she slapped him on the head again.
Ellie, watching as Alex was scolded and slapped by his mother, quietly murmured, “Mom, you two take your time. I’ll head to work.”
She turned and walked out of the room, gently closing the door behind her.
Breakups were always a one–sided decision.
Haley had caused such a scene because she wanted to take a step back and regain control over Alex.
And of course, Alex had fallen right into her trap.
Indeed, in the world of emotions, there was no logic to follow. Love and hate were clear, but everything in between was a muddled mess.
“Ellie, wait!” Haley called out as she clicked her heels toward the elevator.
