Her thick makeup couldn’t hide the redness and puffiness around her eyes. Ellie paused.
Haley’s voice dripped with venom. “Did you hear me tell Alex I wanted to break up? Are you happy about that?”
Ellie merely tugged at the corner of her lips, offering no response.
Haley, seeing Ellie’s silence, her eyes filled with malice, sneered, “Are you pleased to see Alex’s mom treat me like that?”
Ellie lifted her eyelids to glance at Haley, but she still didn’t speak.
Haley stepped closer to Ellie, her voice low enough for only the two of them to hear, gritting her teeth as she said, “You saw it earlier, didn’t you?
“Alex loves me. Even if I told him I wanted to break up, and even if his mother tries to stop him, he won’t leave me.”
Haley paused for a moment before adding, “Alex already told me. Saving Aaron was just an accident. He promised me that if anything happens to Ethan this time, he won’t let you two get away with it.”
Ellie suddenly spoke up, her voice cutting through Haley’s taunts. “Haley, remember that necklace I gave you? You didn’t want it back then, but did you steal it later?”
Haley froze, her expression faltering for a second before she quickly denied it. “I’m the daughter of the Owens family. What kind of jewelry haven’t I seen? Why would I steal your things?”
Ellie kept her gaze fixed on Haley, analyzing her every reaction.
Haley, growing defensive, couldn’t help but raise her voice. “You, some poor country girl, begged me to take it. I didn’t want it then, and now you’re accusing me of stealing it?”
Ellie remained calm, her tone indifferent. “No need to get worked up, I was just asking.” The elevator doors opened, and Ellie turned and stepped inside.
Haley’s eyes widened in shock, watching the doors slowly close.
It felt as if all her energy had drained away in that instant. She leaned weakly against the wall, breathing heavily.
Years ago, when Ellie had given her the necklace, Haley had refused it, saying it was a men’s style. But when she left later, she suddenly thought it looked special and had slipped it into her pocket without a second thought.
Everything happens for a reason. ‘I am destined to be Alex’s wife, destined for wealth and fortune,‘ she thought to herself.

Three days later, Alex was discharged from the hospital before his stitches were even removed.
That evening, when Ellie came back from work, Nancy caught her at the stairwell. “Ellie, that bastard somehow pissed off the family doctor and sent him packing. Can you change his bandages for him later?”
Stunned for a moment, Ellie then agreed to change Alex’s bandages for Nancy later that night. She returned to her room, got busy with her own things, and planned to see Alex after she finished resting.
When she saw the door slightly ajar, Ellie walked in.

Standing at the bedroom door, she saw Alex lying on the bed in a dark–colored silk nightshirt, his eyes closed, sprawled out across the bed.
Her gaze fell on the pink medical kit next to him, and Ellie couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her lips.
“Undo the button on your shirt, or you can just lift it up yourself Ellie said, glancing at the video playing on the phone in Alex’s hand without giving him any obvious indication.
Seeing Alex lay there unmoving, Ellie frowned. “I’ll count to three. If you don’t open your eyes, you can change the bandages yourself.”
She began. “One…”
Alex, seemingly irritated, suddenly sat up straight in bed. His eyes locked onto Ellie’s, filled with resentment. “How am I supposed to undo the buttons with my injury? You do it.”
