Alex suddenly asked for the necklace, catching Haley completely off guard.

“Alex, why are you suddenly asking for the necklace?” Haley cautiously asked, testing the waters.

Alex tried to suppress the storm of emotion’s brewing inside him. “Ethan’s in trouble. I’m worried about you, so I came to check on you.”
He continued with a calm demeanor. “I thought I’d take the necklace with me to get it fixed while I’m here. I noticed there was a diamond missing.”
Haley lowered her head, hiding the emotions in her eyes. It took her a long while before she spoke up. “I’m sorry, Alex, but I lied. Actually, I lost the necklace.”
Seeing Alex’s face darken instantly, Haley quickly added, “It’s been a crazy time with Ethan’s case. My family’s been a mess. I’ve been really down lately, and my mind’s all over the place. I just don’t know where I put it.”
“I promise, as soon as I find it, I’ll give it back to you,” she added.
Haley knew deep down that Alex wasn’t here to comfort her. He didn’t care about her feelings; he was here to get necklace back.
Alex stared at her for a long time, his expression unreadable, not saying a word.
“Go back and rest,” he said irritably, throwing the words out as he turned to leave.
