Nancy set down her fork, her expression turning stern. “Your father and I are in agreement on this matter. You can call off the engagement with the Grant family, but only if you break things off with Haley and bring home a respectable, well- mannered girlfriend.”
Alex’s gaze involuntarily drifted toward Ellie once again.
Ellie couldn’t help but curl her lips into a wry smile, thinking to herself, ‘He’s unreasonable, crazy, and impossible to deal with. Who in their right mind would want to be with someone like him?
‘I must’ve cried too much as a kid and clogged my brain with tears to end up liking this mess of a man.’
Nancy frowned. “I told you to find a girlfriend, so why are you staring at Ellie?”
Feeling Alex’s intense gaze on her, Ellie grew uneasy. She was terrified he might blurt out something outrageous, so she quickly interjected, “Mom, maybe Alex thinks his social circle is too chaotic and wants me to introduce someone to him.”
Before she could finish her sentence, Alex suddenly stood up. The screech of the chair scraping against the floor was deafening.
He shot Ellie a glare filled with fury, then turned and stormed off
Nancy rolled her eyes at Alex in irritation before turning to Ellie and placing some food on her plate. “Ignore him, Ellie.
“I heard you’re planning a business trip in the next few days. Let me know which city you’re going to, and I’ll make arrangements for you.”
Alex, who had reached the dining room door, stopped in his tracks without realizing it. No one called him back, yet he turned around and walked back on his own.
Nancy raised an eyebrow at him. “Why are you back now?”
Alex gave his mother a sour look and plopped down in the seat next to Ellie. “I’m not full yet,” he grumbled.
Ellie glanced at him cautiously, baffled by his erratic behavior. After days of being away, his return seemed to signal another episode of his peculiar antics.
Carefully, she said, “Mom, I’ll be traveling with Mark. You don’t need to worry.“.
Alex grabbed an entire slice of pie and shoved it into his mouth, chewing aggressively as if there were bones in it.
Upon hearing that Ellie would be traveling with Mark, Nancy’s smile grew wider. “Ellie, Mark is a good guy. You should consider spending more time with him.”
Todd chimed in, “I heard Mark is excellent at Go. When you’re free, you could invite him over to play a few grandfather.”

Alex’s grip tightened around his fork, and his restless leg bouncing slowly came to a halt.
“I like someone mature and steady,” Ellie continued, her tone calm. “It’s best if he has a bit of ambition. I’m not into flashy types.”
Subconsciously, Alex touched the black diamond stud in his left ear. His expression visibly stiffened.
“He doesn’t have to be wealthy,” Ellie added. “But he should at least respect and support me. He should be emotionally stable, understand my struggles, and protect me from getting hurt.”
