“Ellie,” Alex yelled impatiently, his voice sharp as he called after her. He had just started to step into the street to follow her when Haley, who had just gotten out of the car, stopped him.
Haley’s gaze landed on Ellie’s disheveled appearance, and an inexplicable sense of satisfaction washed over her. She tugged on Alex’s arm, urging him back toward the car. “Alex, she’s not a child. At most, she probably just got scratched by some woman. It’s nothing serious.”
Alex stood by Haley’s car, watching Ellie get into a taxi before reluctantly shifting his gaze away.
Once Alex finally got into the passenger seat of her car, Haley quickly buckled her seatbelt. “Alex, let’s find a place to talk,” she suggested softly.
Lowering the window, Alex leaned his arm against the frame, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. “Haley, I’ve agreed to apply for a marriage license with you. Tomorrow, we’ll go for a medical examination.”
Haley’s expression brightened momentarily before tension crept in.
Calmly, she reached into her bag and pulled out a stack of medical reports, handing them to Alex. “Alex, I’ve been waiting for this day. I just had my medical checkup done; here, take a look.”
Alex took the reports, flipping through them rapidly until he found what he was looking for.
One particular gynecological report stopped him cold. The results detailed severe damage to the reproductive system, with a note indicating infertility.
The oppressive tension radiating from Alex in the confined space of the car was suffocating, and Haley found herself holding her breath, her movements restrained.
After what felt like an eternity, Alex finally reacted.
Calmly, he handed the report back to Haley. Looking her straight in the eyes, he said, “Medicine has come a long way. I’ll take you abroad so we can get another examination done together and consult a specialist.”
Haley’s expression faltered, her composure cracking. She forced herself to speak. “Alex, do you not trust me?”
Alex replied simply, “No.”
“Then why,” Haley pressed, her voice rising, “do you insist on having me undergo another exam when you’ve already seen my reports?”
Alex frowned, irritation flashing across his face. “This is for both of our benefit. Marriage isn’t a game; we owe it to each other to take responsibility, in every aspect.”
Haley suddenly snapped. “Don’t make it sound so noble! If you didn’t trust me or want to take responsibility, then why did you make all those promises to me back then?”
Her voice broke as she continued, “Everything wrong with me and everything I’ve lost is because I risked my life to save you!”
Haley’s voice rose to a near–hysterical pitch. “Fine, I’ll go abroad for the tests, but only after we’ve gotten the marriage license first!”

Just as Haley was teetering on the brink of collapse, Alex’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen, his expression hardening as he swiftly stepped out of the car to answer. “Wait for me in my room. I’ll be back soon,” he said curtly.
Ending the call, Alex turned back to the car and addressed Haley, “You’re too emotional to drive right now. I’ll call a driver for you. Take a moment to rest,”
“Alex!” Haley’s voice cracked as she sat in the car, watching Alex’s retreating figure. Tears spilled over, her sobs breaking the silence of the night.
Late Night Earl Hotel, in Alex’s private suite, Alex tossed his jacket onto the couch as he walked in, his tone brisk. “Talk.”
Barry, already waiting, stepped forward. “We’ve located Nolan. To be cautious, I recorded a statement on video.”
Barry opened his laptop and slid it toward Alex.
