In the suite, a loud slap rang out. Haley was struck hard by her father, the force of the blow leaving her dizzy and disoriented, her vision swimming.

Evelyn quickly stepped in front of Haley, confronting her husband. “Haley has been bullied like this, and you’re still able to hit her? How can you do this?”
“Idiot,” Logan growled. “You know full well that necklace has something to do with Ellie, and yet you still dared to say it in front of her. Where’s your brain?”
Haley had already lost count of how many times she’d been slapped that night.
Her face was so swollen and bruised it couldn’t even be described as pitiful, and her sobs were even more terrifying to hear. “I’ve thrown that necklace away!
“No one except me and Alex has ever seen it. No matter how much Ellie doubts it, she can’t catch me on anything.”

Alex’s eyes kept darting toward Ellie, his ion indecisive.
He hesitated for a long moment before finally speaking. “When I was kidnapped, I overheard the kidnappers on the phone saying the Warren family had called the police and they were planning to kill me.
“I managed to escape, and I was saved by a girl. Not only did she save me, but at a critical moment, she blocked a needle that was supposed to be injected into me.”
Alex continued, “I had a head injury, couldn’t see clearly, and was disoriented. I ripped the necklace off my neck and gave it to her, telling her to get me out of there.
“But when I woke up, I was in a hospital, and over a week had passed.”
Alex explained, “The one who got me to the hospital and called the police was Nolan, but there was more than one person who saved me.”
Todd’s face darkened. “Why didn’t you say anything earlier?”
Alex’s eyes flicked toward Ellie again, his gaze cloudy. “Because I made a promise to that girl, to go back and find her. I thought I could do it.”

He went, for several summers in a row.
Just as he had promised, he wore a white shirt and carried a pink cartoon backpack.

He stood at the south entrance of Industrial Park, waiting. He waited until the area was demolished and rebuilt, but the girl never came to pick up the backpack.
Ellie sat numb on the couch, fragments of memories flashing through her mind.
“Keep the necklace safe, take me out of here, and I’ll repay you,” the boy had said.
“I lost my backpack. My mom will scold me if she finds out. Can you buy me another one?” Ellie had asked.
“Don’t cry. Wait for me. I’ll get you the prettiest backpack, pink,” he had promised.
“Then you wear this outfit, carry the pink backpack, and wait for me by the big tree at the south gate. When I see the pink backpack, I’ll know it’s you,” she had told him.
