Beneath the rainy sky, Ellie watched as Alex, holding a sharp dagger, carefully carved away the skin where the tattoo lay. He used all his strength, each stroke scraping down to the bone.
Blood poured from the wounds, mixing with the rain, making the bright red color even more vivid. She didn’t intervene or say a word; her face was like when she saw him carve Haley’s name onto his ring finger.
Back then, her heart was full of pain, but now she felt only numbness. With a clatter, the bloody dagger fell into the puddle forming beneath Alex’s feet, turning the already red water into an even brighter shade.
As she watched Alex, whose arm shook from pain, she saw him cautiously approach her, his eyes red with emotion.
Ellie spoke, “Even if you erase the surface, that tattoo on your ring finger has become part of you. Unless you die, you will never get rid of it.
“Just like the debt you owe me; unless you’re dead, you will never repay it in this lifetime.”
“Do you hate me?” Alex stopped in front of Ellie, looking into her eyes. When Ellie stayed silent, Alex, ignoring his pain, grabbed her shoulders tightly, asking again, “Ellie, do you hate me?”
Ellie looked into the depths of Alex’s soul. By the overpass, they stood in the rain, staring at each other for a long time. Finally, Ellie replied calmly, “You are not worthy of my hate.”
At that moment, Alex completely collapsed. Tears mingled with rain as they streamed down his face; he struggled to control himself, loosening his hold on Ellie’s shoulders only to tighten it again in a frantic cycle.
Ellie remained still, her gaze cold as she looked at him. Finally, Alex let go. They stood side by side on the overpass, both looking down at the fog–covered river below.
“I admit, I have hurt you more than once for Haley’s sake, and I spoke cruelly to your parents–I deserve every bit of punishment.” Alex finally found his voice.
His face turned dull as he looked at Ellie, his quiet tone full of desperation. “Ellie, give me a chance to make things right.” Ellie looked away, her expression indifferent as she faced Alex, asking, “Are you sure you want to make things right?”
With tear–filled eyes, Alex fervently nodded. “As long as you allow it, I will do anything you want.”
“Are you really sure?” Ellie pressed.
Alex replied, “If you doubt me, I can swear to the heavens.”
“Then I beg you, from this moment on, do not come before me again,” Ellie declared, instantly freezing all expression from Alex’s face.
“I don’t want to see you again; even if we meet in the future, please stay away from me–don’t come any closer.”
“I can’t do that!” Alex suddenly shouted, the pain in his voice clear against the unending rain. The thought of such a separation felt worse than death itself.
Ellie let out a cold laugh. Her voice shifted from calmness to strong resolve. “So, Haley was right; the most selfish person is
you.

Chapter 288
“You act solely on your desires, completely ignoring the feelings of others; you don’t know what respect is, nor how to truly love anyone. You only love yourself.”
“Don’t pretend to feel sorry, saying you want to make up for things. You can’t do it.” With that, Ellie pushed past Alex and walked away.
As she turned her back on him, Alex, feeling desperate, lunged forward recklessly to hug her tightly once more. “I can change.”
His breath was heavy as he buried his face into the crook of Ellie’s neck. “I will listen to you and change everything about me that you don’t like. I will become the person you once loved.”
