Ellie refused to take Haley to Aaron. If Aaron wanted to meet, he would do it on his own. They might get through difficulties, but it didn’t mean they could finally make it.
Haley wasn’t naive. When she was pursuing Aaron, he made it clear about their differences. He told her about his responsibilities, his lack of a car or house, his father’s medical needs, and his mother’s illiteracy
And now, Haley was talking about her parents and her family’s reputation? Ellie had seen it through–Haley was just wavering on this.
After they parted ways, Ellie spent the entire day at home. As evening rolled around, she made some spaghetti, planning to eat before heading to her part–time job at the bar
She figured life was about trading what you had for what you wanted. Right now, she had nothing, so her only option was to focus on making some money.
Just as she picked up her fork, the doorbell rang. When Ellie opened the door and saw Alex, she instinctively tried to close it. but he was quicker and barged in.
She could feel his anger and recalled his rude behavior at Haley’s birthday party. She turned back to the dining table.
“What? Feeling guilty?” Alex’s gaze was intense as he pinned her with his eyes.
Ellie walked over to the dining table, hesitating before she spoke, I’m not feeling guilty.”
The kitchen opened up into a dining area with an island in the middle. Ellie stood on one side, and Alex on the other.
He snatched the fork from her hand and threw it onto the table with a clatter. He leaned in, hands on the table, looking her straight in the eye. “Ellie, what did you say to Haley?”
Ellie met his gaze, feeling the tension. She paused briefly. Haley had visited her that morning, and they had talked, but Ellie hadn’t intended to cause any trouble between Alex and Haley. She didn’t know what had happened between them, but Alex’s expression told her it was serious.
She looked down at her now mushy spaghetti and picked up her fork. “She did come to see me, but we only talked about Aaron,” she said.
“Too scared to admit it?” Alex moved around the island to stand in front of her, gripping her chin to force her to look at him “If you didn’t say anything to her, why would she suddenly return that necklace to me?”
Ellie tried to pull away from his grip. Growing up, Alex had always been hands–on, but now she felt uncomfortable with his touch
She finally broke free, but before she could step back, he grabbed her by the neck and pulled her closer.
Alex shouted at Ellie, his voice laced with frustration, “Still trying to argue with me? Isn’t this what you wanted?”
He waved the pink diamond necklace in front of her face, his eyes filled with mockery “Haley didn’t want it anymore. Did you think I’d just give it to you?” He tossed it into the trash, the sound echoing in the room.
Ellie was stunned, her lips trembling as she met his mocking gaze.
