Layton, feeling worn out, flopped onto the couch. “How did you end up so unlucky? Just when you finally understood your feelings and had a chance to impress Ellie’s parents, you were followed by Haley.”
Alex irritatedly lit a cigarette. “She hid in
a cab and followed us, I was too careless.”
Layton looked at Alex with a pained expression. “If Haley’s words weren’t so harsh, Ellie’s dad wouldn’t have hobbled to the station in the middle of the night, trying to bring his daughter home.
“The biggest problem between you and Ellie now is that not only did she witness you chasing after Haley, but you also dragged her into it and hurt her for Haley’s sake.”
“Even so, I don’t want to let go.” Alex lowered his gaze in pain, hiding the emotions in his eyes. “She used to listen to me the most. She did care about me.”
Layton said, “You know that’s all in the past. Unless you somehow give Ellie a new brain, she’ll never forget how you hurt her for Haley.”
Alex’s hand, holding the cigarette, shook a little. He bowed his head silently for a while before saying, “No one can guarantee they’ll never make mistakes in their life.”
Layton said, “It’s okay to make mistakes, and loving the wrong person isn’t a big deal. You can even make amends if you hurt someone, but it all depends on the situation.
“Though you didn’t kill Mr. Thompson, ultimately some of the blame falls on you. A life was lost. You keep talking about making it right, but what can you really do to compensate?
“In my opinion, you should stop daydreaming. Apologize to Ellie properly, give her some money as a dowry, and help her find a decent guy to marry. Be her brother, look out for her, and bet no one will dare to mess with her.”
Before Layton finished speaking, Alex had already grabbed his jacket and exited the room. Alex didn’t know how he ended up leaving the hotel. His mind was full of Layton’s hurtful words

Seeing her furrow her brow in silent frustration, too upset to show anger, would oddly lift his mood for the whole day.
