The car slowly pulled out of the Warren estate. Aaron couldn’t help but ask, “Uncle, why do you say the Warren family’s affairs are the Thompson family’s affairs too?”
Jason wore a serious expression as he murmured, “My return was made possible because Nathan, the eldest heir of the Warren family, sacrificed everything for it.”
Aaron fell silent for the rest of the ride.
Years ago, Ellie, being young and inexperienced, nearly drowned while trying to save someone. Harold ended up losing a leg in the attempt, leaving him disabled. Suddenly, all the burdens fell onto their illiterate mother, Joanna.
To make matters worse, their grandfather passed away, and one of his army buddies, Carlos, came to pay his respects. Seeing their difficult situation, he couldn’t just stand by and offered them help.
For the sake of Aaron and Ellie’s education, Joanna made the tough choice to let Carlos take Ellie away, and she ended up living with the Warren family for over ten years.
But what no one expected was that the person Ellie had saved that day turned out to be Alex! And tragically, it was because of Alex that Harold lost his life.
Once, the goodwill of their elders didn’t yield any positive results, and the Thompson and Warren families ended up in a terrible situation.
As if all of this wasn’t shocking enough, it got even weirder when Jason and Nathan turned out to be comrades–in–arms! Not only that, but Nathan also lost his life trying to save Jason in a plane crash! What kind of twisted fate was this?
Upon returning to the Thompson residence, Jason took Whitney with him to the York family in Lunaville.
A few days later, Alex returned home from his trip abroad and rushed back to the Warren Manor.
As he opened the door to his parents‘ room, he saw Nancy sitting cross–legged on the couch, her hair a tangled mess. In front of her lay a neatly folded military uniform and some men’s personal items.
Alex’s breath caught in his throat.
“Mom,” he said, not realizing his eyes were already red. He squatted beside Nancy, carefully reaching out to touch the military uniform.
“Alex, your
brother… he’ll never come back!” Nancy’s eyes were swollen from crying; she looked completely worn out after just a few days.
Alex lowered his head, clenching his jaw in silence. A few years ago, when the Department of Defense announced his brother’s sacrifice, it shocked everyone in the Warren family and sent shockwaves through the entire elite cirele of Jaslands.
After the initial grief, the Warrens held onto a sliver of hope! Because all they received was a death notification, and the military sealed off all information–no updates about him, living or dead!
But now, that last bit of hope had shattered completely! There would be no more fantasies!
Nancy hugged the uniform tightly, her voice trembling, “Alex, if you could be half as good as your brother, the Warren family wouldn’t be in such a mess!”

Alex gripped the edge of the couch, his hands slowly tightening. He kept his head down, his expression hidden, squatting there in silence for what felt like ages.
Finally, after an unknown amount of time, Alex shifted his numb legs and stood up. “Mom, I’ll do my best. I won’t let anyone down again! You should take care of yourself; I’m going upstairs now.”
As he reached the doorway, Nancy’s voice called out again, “Alex, your dad and I have picked out a few women suitable for an arranged marriage. You should choose one and get married soon. I’m not old–fashioned, but you know that thing is not good for your health.”
Confused, Alex made his way upstairs.
“Who’s been in my room?!” Upon entering his bedroom, he immediately found his rubber doll was missing!
