Jason smiled fondly, “Sometimes it’s better not to state the obvious; it must be hard to keep it bottled up, right?”
Gazing at the garden’s scenery, Jason wrapped his arms around Whitney. “I don’t know how much has gone down between Ellie and Alex. Maybe Alex has messed up badly, and Ellie has truly suffered, but I still hope she can forgive and be magnanimous. Only then can she truly be herself.”
His last mission had been alongside Nathan, working with special ops from several countries to take down a notorious drug organization.
They watched helplessly as their teammates fell one by one, unable to recover their bodies for fear of exposing their identities while the mission was still ongoing.
What started with over twenty spirited young men whittled down to just nine in less than a year. Two years later, only three returned.
Of those three, one was severely injured and the other was in a deep coma, still lying in a military hospital.
Perhaps only someone like him, who has braved life and death, understands that everything in this world, aside from life and death, is really just minor stuff.
Jason said, “A wastrel returning to the fold is priceless, but only if Ellie can forgive him.”
“Alex and Ellie’s entanglement runs deep. Now the Warren family suddenly wants to ally with us; it all feels off,” Whitney mused, her expression scrunching up in worry. “You just got back, so you don’t know him well. Neither Nalani nor Ellie can handle that wild card.”
“There’s no business without deception. The Warren family is a top–notch old–money clan. That kid’s been exposed to that world since he was little; it’s surprising if he’s not cunning.”
Jason replied, “His surroundings shaped his upbringing; his upbringing shaped his character, and his character will shape his destiny. The law of cause and effect is inescapable for everyone, including him.”
It was a cozy evening when Alex dropped off Nalani.
“Hey, Auntie, where’s Ellie?” Nalani asked, looking around.
Whitney glanced at Alex, her expression calm. “She moved out.”
Alex fell silent, a small frown creasing his brow.
Once Alex left, Whitney cautiously spoke up, “So, Nalani, what do you think of Alex?”
Nalani snorted, “Total loser, what else is there to say-?”
Whitney raised an eyebrow, “Should I have a word with your parents and maybe delay this whole marriage thing?”
“Auntie, I appreciate your concern, but seriously, let me handle my own mess, okay?” After saying that, Nalani excused

herself and headed out in her car.
Just past ten that night, in a private room at the Earl Hotel lounge, Nalani pushed the door open, stepping inside.
“Spill it. What do you want from me?” Nalani leaned against the wine cabinet, eyeing Layton, who was lounging on the sofa.
Layton set down his glass, fixing his gaze on her. “Do you know he’s got feelings for someone else?!”
Nalani raised an eyebrow, unfazed. “And? It’s not like I want anything from him.”
“Then what are you after? His status? His connections? His money?!” Layton stood up, closing the distance between them.
Nalani pretended to think seriously. “As a divorced woman, I obviously don’t want anything too practical-”
A dangerous glint flickered in Layton’s eyes. “Are you serious?”
Before Nalani could respond, Layton wrapped his arms around her, lifting her off the ground and pressing her back against the wine cabinet.
Nalani laughed, full of mischief. “Layton, what do you think you’re doing?”
Layton leaned in closer, his lips brushing against her neck. “I’m here to sleep with you!”
