It wasn’t until Barry and the bodyguards lifted Alex out of the water together that Ellie saw what had been supporting him.
The broken tree root beneath him was jagged and uneven, stained with a dark red.
Her eyes fell on Alex’s face, covered in blood, and Ellie’s tears flowed uncontrollably as she whispered, “Crazy.”
Barry said, “Ms. Thompson, Mr. Warren had already sent someone to Sheahow Church to pick up Ms. Janssen last night. You should come back with us.”
A few hours later, at the Imperial Hospital, Alex was transferred from the emergency room to a VIP ward.
“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Warren. It’s all my fault,” Ellie said.
Carlos‘ condition had improved, and when she heard that Quinlee was sick and her sister was too busy to come back, Ellie decided to go and bring her home.
After all, Quinlee had played a significant role in getting Ryker to agree to the surgery.
But Ellie never expected an accident to happen on the way. And she certainly didn’t anticipate that Alex would show up just in time to save her once again.
“The patient’s vital signs are stable. The prolonged unconsciousness might be related to psychological factors. Family members should talk to him more, see if that can help wake him up,” the doctor suggested.
Alex had been unconscious for a day and a night without waking up.
In the afternoon, Ellie stayed in Alex’s hospital room, taking care of him.
She sat on a chair, leaned over his hospital bed, and held his hand.
In the reed marsh, she had listened to Alex talking incessantly.
When he fell silent, she thought he was just tired and had fallen asleep. She didn’t realize that he had actually fainted.
Even in his unconscious state, his body remained propped up, and his arm around her still had strength.
She remembered every word he had said before slipping into unconsciousness.
He had said, “Ellie, let’s go back to the way things were. I’ll protect you, and you’ll just listen to me.”
He had said, “Think about me. Don’t ignore me.”
Later, he had cried.
He had pleaded. “Can you give me just one more chance?”
He had admitted, “I know it was my fault, but I can’t bear to just miss out on you like this.”
He had confessed. “You have no idea how scared I’am of you ignoring me.”
And then he had held her tightly, apologizing over and over again.

She didn’t know why he felt the need to apologize to her, but she was heartbroken for him.
She had secretly liked him for so long, and she had never imagined that he would respond to her with such intensity.
At that moment, she had really wanted to say yes to him. But she hadn’t forgotten what Aaron had told her.

Their eyes met, and Ellie was stunned for a moment.
“I heard everything. You can’t go back on your word,” Alex said, ignoring the pain in his body as he struggled to sit up and pulled Ellie into his arms.
