“I won’t do anything to you. I just want to sit down and have a calm conversation with you?
Hearing Alex’s voice, dripping with emotion, Ellie felt no warmth, only sarcasm and disgust.
“Ellie, I’m begging you, just turn around,” Alex pleaded, noticing Ellie still kept her head down, giving him no response. On the brink of breaking down, he moved a little closer to her, delicately and cautiously, but the movement startled Ellie nonetheless.
Seeing Ellie pulling away from him, Alex reached out again, trying to grasp her arm through the blanket. “Ellie, say something!” he pleaded.
He desperately wanted to hear her voice, even if it was to hit him, scold him, or hate him. He couldn’t bear how Ellie was so coldly ignoring him like this.
“Ellie!” Alex persisted, moving closer. His eyes were rimmed with red as he said, “Luck has been wandering around looking for you since you left. How about I bring him here for you to take care of?
“The rare orchids Grandpa left behind, no one can take care of them like you can. I know you’re angry with me, even hate me, but those orchids were left to you by Grandpa. Are you really going to abandon them?”
At that moment, the bedroom door was opened from outside. Aaron burst in and threw punches at Alex.
Ellie curled up on the bed, covering her head, trying to avoid the commotion. Alex was knocked onto Ellie’s bed by Aaron’s punches. Ignoring the incoming hits, Alex reached for Ellie’s hand, calling her name, only to be angrily pulled off the bed by
Aaron.
Aaron watched as Ellie’s emotions crumbled; she was curled up under the blankets, trembling uncontrollably. He grabbed Alex by the collar and dragged him out of Ellie’s room.
Seeing Joanna, Whitney, and Jason in the hallway, Alex, with bloodshot eyes, spoke up. “Mrs. Thompson, I kept my three- year promise to you. I just want to see her!”
Joanna said, “My daughter doesn’t want to see you.”
Joanna’s words sent Alex into another tailspin. “Aaron!” He turned his head numbly to look at Aaron.
With a stern expression, Aaron pointed to the staircase, saying, “It’s not just Ellie–none of us wants to see you again!”
From inside the room, Ellie’s muffled sobs of frustration echoed. Whitney quickly stepped forward, grabbing Alex and pulling him toward the staircase. “It’s the middle of the night, you troublesome brat! Get back already,” she urged.
Whitney was half–dragging, half–pulling Alex away when Jason stopped them. Dressed in dark satin pajamas, Jason blocked the hallway with one arm.
Jason’s face remained expressionless, but his voice was clearly a warning. “Give me your word: from now on, you are forbidden from seeing Ellie again!”
“Jason!” Alex was frantic.
“Speak!” Jason’s tone grew stricter, causing Whitney, Aaron, and Joanna to pale.
Alex glanced back at Ellie’s room. Gritting his teeth, he said to Jason, “I can’t do that!”
Before Alex could finish speaking, Jason was already in front of him. Two cracks sounded as Jason flipped Alex over his

shoulder, throwing Alex onto the hallway floor.
Alex was in so much pain that sweat formed on his forehead; Jason had broken Alex’s arms and was now holding Alex down with his foot.
Alex endured in silence, meeting Jason’s piercing gaze from the floor, “I love Ellie. If you want me to let go, you have to kill me first!” Alex exclaimed.
Jason squatted casually next to Alex, his elongated fingers gripping Alex’s chin, a cruel smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
